Wide angle lens?

Post Mon Feb 23, 2009 2:27 pm

Hi,

I'm going to be traveling to Rome in a few months and want to make sure that I can take pics of the buildings and arhitecture, like the coliseum. I want to know if anyone has been there and can recommend a lens that would work well for this.

I currently own the Canon EF 17-85mm IS f4/5.6 and a Canon telephoto EF 200mm f2.8L. Will I be able to get wide enough shots with the lens I already have?

Thanks!

On an FX (or film) body the 17 ought to be wide enough, on DX (1.5) maybe not. If the 17 is designed for film or full frame and you're using it with a 1.5x crop digital camera, it's field of view is only equivalent to a ~25mm wide angle. You might be wise to run around and shoot some architecture locally before you go over to see just how it works out.

For Rome I would certainly advise to bring a super wide angle lens such as the Canon EF-S 10-22 or a comparable one from a third party. To get an overview of the inside of the Colosseum, the St. Peter or the Trevi, the 17mm will defintely not be wide enough.

i second the Tokina. i have a Sigma 10-20mm for my D300 and it's decent, but having tried the Tokina i'm inclined to switch once paycheck comes in ~~
