Do you have any scratches at the bottom of your camera, coming form locking pin that are on tripods head plates?
It's hunting me that I'm the only Canon EOS 40D who have this problem

nope I use a permanently mounted quick release so I'm not hunting for the hole...
I also shoot Nikon, so it has to be a camera related thing... right?

It's good you have some scratches. Now you can just enjoy shooting rather than worrying about it. It's just normal stuff and nothing to get excited about. Kind of like having scuff marks on the hot shoe because you actually used a real flash.
