Digital camera recommendation

Post Fri Sep 12, 2003 9:11 am

I'm seeking to buy a new digital camera & would like recommendations. I'd like to spend $600-800 for a camera that will take high quality images in mostly outdoor (mountain & garden) settings. The photos will mostly be used on the web in my pbase site, but I'd also like to be able to make creditable prints (at least 5x7 or possibly 8x10s if that's a realistic expectation).

If you need more info on my needs in order to give a recommendation, let me know. Thanks in advance.

Printing quality 8x10s from a $600-800 digital is not an unrealistic expectation. A good 5 meg digital will hold its own against 35 mm film at 8x10. Take a look at Norman Koren's article on Image Quality at http://www.luminous-landscape.com.

Two issues you should first consider, zoom length and camera size.

If you want a long zoom, the ability to reach out and capture subjects take a look at the Minolta D7Hi. If you want a more compact camera start with the Canon G5.

I'm not saying that on of these two cameras is what you should get. But they're good starting places. Spend some time on http://www.dpreview.com, read the reviews (Cameras - upper left) and visit the Minolta and Canon forums. Do a search and see to which cameras people are comparing (Minolta to Nikon 5700, Sony F717, for example).

I agree with Bob that the G5 is a good place to start. Or if you want to go "dSLR", take a look at the new Canon 300D (but I don't know how much they are selling for in the US).

I started with the G2 and now have a Canon D60 and have not regretted it as IMHO, the D60 is a great camera.

Be sure to check cameras with longer optical zooms...

Personally, I like the longer zooms for outside shots of children, families, critters, etc. I have found that I am able to take more 'natural' shots of people when they are not aware of the camera.

There are several cameras available with 6X, 7X, 8X, 10X and 12X optical zoom lens that are available in 2-4 megapixels.

Fuji, HP, Kodak, Panasonic, Olympus, Minolta are manufacturers who produce these cameras. Most of them are in your price range.

I use a 2 megapixel Oly with a 10X optical and have been very happy with it. It is a better camera than its owner is a photographer.
