554th Show & Tell Competition: Protest and Defiance

Post Sat Jun 06, 2020 8:48 pm

Today I joined a peaceful protest rally near our Philadelphia neighborhood for Black Lives Matter. Not knowing what to expect, I brought my now-ancient Canon 30D and my cheapest lens, in case things got rough. In fact it was all peaceful and most people were wearing anti-coronavirus masks and distancing; and I got a few shots. It eventually got too crowded for my taste and I came home to see that I had won this past week's contest, for which I am grateful. Inspired by my sojourn with the protesters, this would be an appropriate week to have our theme be Protest and Defiance. I realize that most of us don't do this sort of reportage photography and apologize if you would prefer a more artistic topic. But since we are on the 554th PBase contest, I hope you will give latitude in trying something new. I would like to consider any image that shows protest or defiance, but no gore or violence, please. I only have my one worthy photo from today to show as an example.

Posting Photos for a Contest
1. Photos must be hosted on pbase.com
2. Maximum of 3 photos per contest.
3. Photos must be embedded in your post. See the following link for how to do this http://forum.pbase.com/viewtopic.php?t=18022
4. Post only medium versions of your picture using the PB-Image button
5. The host is not eligible for their own contest.
6. Any picture you've taken is eligible, regardless of date taken and camera, as long as it hasn't already won another contest.
7. You can do all the post processing you want.

Winning and Running a Contest
1. If you enter the Show and Tell Contest, please note the closing date and be sure to check back to see if you won.
2. If you win the Show and Tell Contest and cannot run the next one, please notify the person running the contest immediately, so they can notify the second place winner.
3. If you decide to run the next contest, please post the new contest within 24 hours.
4. When the contest ends, please post the winners within 24-48 hours. (If you keep an eye on entries during the week, you will have a good idea of your favorites by the time the contest ends, and be able to more quickly post your winners.)
5. If you know you will not be able to post a contest, judge it, and post winners, within these timeframes, please do not start one. Instead, notify the person running the contest, so they can pass it on to the second place winner.
6. Pick first, second, and third place winners. You may include up to 5 honorable mentions.
7. Include these rules in the body of your contest.

Hope these aren’t too far out.

Drumming through history can be a metaphor for protest.
So, I submit this self-portrait of some of my hand-drumming.
My “Drumming” gallery is itself a form of protest.

Planting ones’ own garden, whether food or flowers can be seen
as protest against over-industrialization and abuse of the planet.

The beginning of June, 2020, I created this composition as
Protest & Solidarity. Entitled: “I Can’t Breathe.”

Not having any shots of protesters am posting a couple of shots associated with today's troubles.

TippTipp "The famous Arab Slave Trader in East Africa" who was still operating in the 1940s. One wonders at the misery and deaths this man was responsible for.

The Scales of Justice, Frankfurt

Can we count Remembrance Day as a form of protest ?
