514th Show & Tell Competition: Unexpected Beauty Spot Away from the Tourists

Post Thu Jun 06, 2019 1:53 am

These are places I have got to, away from the usual tourist trails and with difficulty, that have surprised me with their beauty enough to evoke a real "Wow!' response. My examples are all from my own country, but you will have had similar experiences anywhere in the world. Please share them.

1. If you enter the Show and Tell Contest, please note the closing date and be sure to check back to see if you won.

During a visit to Kyoto, I went off for a walk across the street from my hotel, the Westin Mikayo, trying to find the Nanzenji temple. I got lost on a side-track and ended up wandering through the woods... Found this aged Inari Fox in the middle of nowhere.

If you know your way around my hometown Heppenheim in Germany, you can find amazing vistas on trails that only the locals know about...

Definitely off the beaten path, but very photogenic nonetheless. Remnants of an old pier on the Columbia River, Washington State

...and then I saw this, in a small village, almost on the border with Ukraine

Not on the tourist maps, but when you stop in this really small village (with population of only 20 or sth) you put yourself into this magical interior. (If interested please open the gallery and read the description)

And this charming pond, hidden in the outskirts of Warsaw, just at the dirt road.

Exchamsiks Valley, norther-west British Columbia, only accessible by jet boat (or canoe)

A winter escape on Francois Lake, N. British Columbia.

Tendele, Royal Natal National Park, S.Africa. My favourite place in the world :)

PS Paul, if you go into "edit" and out of it without doing anything, your shots will appear, miraculously !!

El Mirador: An abandoned Restaurant north of Ensenada off the Tijuana-Ensenada Highway perched on a 750 foot high cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Laguna Mountains: View from Garnet Peak Summit

Sunrise near our house. I have never encountered another person there at that time of day...

Taken on the side of the road in New Mexico, in winter.

A wildlife sanctuary in Delaware. A lovely, out-of-the-way place that makes you wonder why more people don't visit.

Late afternoon walk on Great Island, in Wellfleet Cape Cod. The sandy, woody walk begins after a very long walk down a beach, so you rarely see others.

Places somewhat off the beaten track in the winter.

Just a few steps from Campo dei Fiore, Rome

Nisqually Nationional Wildlife Refuge, frequented mostly by a few local photographers

Whidbey Island Prairie, always scenic and very few tourists.

Paddling at sunrise, the waterways become much busier later in the day.

I usually choose to stay away from the most beaten tracks.
It's possible to find so many apparently neglected places, full of peace and charme.

This is a pond in the middle of a forest. A practically unknown, secret place...

This is a very small village of Northern France, called Port Aven.
It's like being out of time...

This is a small island of lake Leman
