Many thanks to everyone who participated in this contest competition, you have submitted so many great images!
Had really great time looking at all your wonderful stories of fences all around. Not easy to choose only few.

Honorable Mentions in no particular order:

Ken

Margaret

Carol

John

Jarek

Flo

Paul

Gil

THIRD PLACE - Flo - I like the "OUT" position instead of "IN" and how the gees look disappointed.

SECOND PLACE - Carol - beautiful composition and I love the optimistic expression of hope on this boy's face.

FIRST PLACE - Walter - from the beginning this was my first choice though so very sad and dramatic, showing the shame of civilized world. We still remember the Warsaw Jewish Ghetto wall and the East/West Berlin wall, and still nowadays there are new walls being built in Europe to stop the imigrants (in Hungary/Serbia and in Bulgaria/Greece for example).
No fences should ever divide people.

Thanks for the HM, and for the imaginative idea for a competition. I'm always proud to show off my friend's magnificent yard.

Thank you for choosing my image Jola. For me it brought back sad memories to see the border because I used to live not far from the border which divided East and West Germany. The border fence at Playas de Tijuana in my photo can not be approached from the U.S. side as there is a no go zone with another fence, patrols, watch towers, etc. That's the way it used to be on the East German side. On the Mexican side the fence has been decorated and you can walk right up to it. That's the way the West German side used to be, especially in West Berlin. The saddest part about what we saw at the border were the pictures of the people who had died crossing the border. (See image below).

It is my hope that this border fence, and all others dividing people, will be removed in my life time.

Walter,
Thank you for sharing this background for the pictures of the wall and your experience with the Berlin Wall.
Very moving. Important message.

Congrats to Walter on the win and thanks for the HM. The mixing of conceptual and visual aspects made for a great contest theme.
