I used a zoom lens, neutral density filter and tripod. Exposure times were 3-5 seconds thanks to the ND density filter. This allowed me to work the zoom during the exposure. You get different effects from continuous or steps-wise zooms. you can have the image centered on the main subject (here it is a skunk cabbage) or off center.

Another fun technique is Intentional Camera Movement (ICM)

Fave is spinning the camera...inner image can be fairly well focused.

I did a series of Mt. Diablo, this being my favorite. (there are a couple of others in the same gallery)

I agree that the background can be distracting. its best to have a strong contrast/dark background, like in your dashboard shot. i also think that the tripod is important, because its ensures that at least parts of the image are sharp.

Good idea with the tripod, though I did hand hold all mine with lens stabilization on.
