Post a Photo for Critique

Post Tue Mar 15, 2011 4:41 am

I figured that this could actually be helpful.

If you want, post a photo in this thread and another pBase member can review and critique it for you. Hopefully this won't turn into a compliment thread. It can be very useful to have someone give their opinion about what they like and what they dont like about you photo. It can help us grow as photogs.

If you post a photo in this thread, you should be ready to get an honest review from a fellow pBaser.

I will throw myself first into the fire.

Hey,
I just joined pbase and have been bitten by the photography bug about a year ago. I feel like I'm getting better every outing with my camera but hardly ever have my photos critiqued. Here is my latest and favorite photo to date.

As of now I only have 10 photos in my pbase so any other comments or criticism is greatly appreciated.

I use a fixed lens sigma dp2 for all my shots.
Thanks in advance
Also akeiger for your photo, maybe I would have zoomed out a little further to have the right side show where the orifice of the rock ended, or maybe darken the bottom right corner of the photo a little so it doesn't distract the viewer from the sight through the rock. cool photo though :D

akeigher, in my view:
The tones, contrast and sharpness are all good.
Much of the viewing space is given over to framing. Is this needed, given your gallery's plain, neutral background?
The top and bottom spaces given to the rock window frame add atmosphere but not, perhaps, in proportion to space they take. Did you try a square crop?

mattstallone, in my view:
The sharpness and composition are good. I like the house 'on the third' and the boat/rope leading the eye into the picture. Did you try cropping off the right edge – just after the break in the trees.
The image can be given more 'pop' by increasing contrast. Try Photoshop's auto curves to see what I mean.
Might impact of that great sky could be improve? Try increasing contrast with a gradient filter in PS.
The original-sized image is too large for on-screen viewing. Most folk's monitors will be no more than 1920 x 1080. Could the image size be reduced for better viewing?

Good work guys.

John

Thanks, I may try a square.

The white boarder and frame are really added for my personal website, not pbase. It looks good there because the image pops up on the page and it helps to set it off and let my customers know what it will look like framed and signed (see link in my sig if you want to check it out. - I got the idea from Tom Till) I just have been using the same edited photos here are there.
