Found this bird out in the woods hanging dead from a tree. Claws still attached to the trunk. No visible damage or shot holes. Have asked around, but have not yet got reasonable explanation.

Any ideas?

It was almost dark at Venice Rookery the other evening and I was just about to leave when a male great blue heron flew in to roost with his mate; they made the greeting gesture and did the deed in less than a minute...ain't love grand? (ISO 800 1/320s f/5.6 400mm, very dark original file; post processed with DPP 1.5)
