A Kingfisher at last!

Post Thu Sep 23, 2004 7:53 am

I couldn't get close enough with my 100-400L. My only recourse was to use my powershot S45 through my Zeiss Diascope 85. The background was bad, the lighting was bad, it was a very windy day, but I got him, and now I know where he lives. I'll be back!

Nice shot Michael

As I only have an Olympus C-5050, which is a 3X (35-105), I use this trick a lot with either binoculars or scope. Don't have much DOF with that setup but sometimes it work quite well.

With the help of my husband, I have an home made quick release thing that holds the binoculars and the camera. You can see it here :

[quote="gschmickle"]Interesting solution, Michael. Very resourceful!

Actually I can't take the credit, it's a technique called digiscoping that has been perfected by birdwatchers. After watching with envy what they were able to accomplish, I had to make a decision: A Canon 500L for $6000 and an expensive divorce, or a Zeiss Diascope 85 with 20-60X magnification giving an effective focal length of about 3000mm (35mm equiv) for $1500. My wife approves of my wise decision...

And to be really honest, I can't for the life of me understand how Gene gets so close to his birds? I think he's really Dr. Doolittle and knows them all by name ;-)

Here's another example:

and the same shot bird with my 100-400L:
