George, thanks for the link. The disguise section is really cute...funny stuff! I think, hope, they are only kidding. :)

I am a lady so perhaps it's easier for me to "intrude"...dunno. I do always ask parents for permission to photograph their kids, and no one has ever said no. They never even ask why...they are just flattered that I think their kids are cute. Perhaps a man would have a harder time getting permission however, with all the news these past few years about pedophiles. I think the best idea is not to use a disguise or fake personna, but just to be honest and say you love people pictures and find the person/s interesting. You can't go wrong with the truth, right?

I have a question. What do folks here consider to be a "candid" photo? I see that in some of these the subject is looking at the camera so is aware the pic is being taken, and in others not. I prefer to think of the former as unposed or informal pics. For example, this is one of my favorite photos, it's unposed, and she only noticed me as I was about to snap it. So, candid or not? Or does it matter?

I'd really like to know what everyone thinks about the definition of "candid" so I'll know what sort of pics to put in my upcoming gallery.

This old definition may be what you are looking for:

"By definition, candid photos are unposed pictures of serendipitous moments when the subject is either unaware of the camera or doesn't pose otherwise for the photographer."

Thanks, Richard. That makes sense. It also means my photo above qualifies as "candid." This definition means more pics can justifiably go into a candid gallery because if folks do look at my camera, then that's okay! As long as they don't get mad and break it...that's NOT okay! :D

The same photographer, name eludes me at this late hour, also coined that a term called 'Near-Candids'.

"Near-candids is a term for pictures taken when the subject is aware of the camera, but the photographer is able to get a natural, unposed picture anyway"

Those are photos where you have the time to take maybe several photo of the same subject but without direct instructions on how to pose, etc.

Personally I think it's a blurry line and lump it all into 'Candids' as long as there are no direct instructions on how to pose.

Hmmmmm,

So is this a near candid (he definitely knew I was there) or a candid. I took this turned 90 degrees from him with the large protruding focus knob pointing in the direction I was looking. Of course the lens was pointed towards him. :) The camera was a twin lens reflex with a focus screen that I was looking down into.

I don't know about the food (after seing him I didn't order any  )...
But it was the first candid I took with my 10D and was really excited with the result. I also got this guy finishing a 14hour shift.
