I have learnt a lot about different styles, compositions and subjects from visits to many galleries. I enjoy the opportunity to followlnks to similar images done in a differnet style.
As a toastmasters (public speaking hobby) we learn to evaluate speeches, not criticise them. As a guide two praise points and a point for improvement. The point for improvement is given because in your opinion if would work better when you did whatever the improvement is.
I welcome good priase and the opportunity to improve. I reserve the right to dissagree with any point of improvement however, but still welcome the dialogue.
Its a fine line to give encouraging points for improvement. You can also learn far more from that than a simple "great photo", "excellent composition" etc.
Best rule is to comment as the photo affects you and how you might have taken it. The comment is then just a personal opinion, one that at least promotes further experimenting/improvement.
Make the comments worthwhile or don't write anything.

ps I would always try to reply and have a look at anyone's galleries of those interested enough to visit my galleries, but I prefer not to make promises I may not be able to keep regarding exact numbers.
