I sort of chuckle at the friend/foe designation given to the command as IMO it' a somewhat trite ( but clever ) way to create what is essentially an ignore filter -- and those have been around from day one. That said, I appreciate that the moderators create useful tools for all of us to utilize, even if I think that the personification is unnecessary.

This isn't something that the PBase Admins have done; they're the default terms used in the phpBB software. It's exactly the same on another Forum that I'm an admin of. In our case, we haven't even thought about whether the terms can be changed, much less whether they should; it's probably the same with pBase.

The purpose of Genghis posts is to get people to another website. If you click on the '!' in the top right, takes you to a window, with a drop down menu and you can report a poster whose main purpose to to take you off site....I reported a couple of his images...

Actually, Scott (Genghis) used to be a fairly decent contributer to the Show and Tell. Then, for whatever reason, a dominating streak came over him and he would flood the forum with new threads or re-post to his previous threads repeatedly. This is not to say in the least that the images were poor..just the opposite. However the tsunami of images just blocked out any other contributions from other Pbase members....this friend/foe feature may very well be a default setting in these types of forums but Pbase had never needed to use it...until Scott abused the privilege. It is sad that such a great artist's need to be noticed actually created his "disappearance" [I believe he has the most "foes" of any other Pbase member].

I've always considered them to be at best "meh", not that I've gone out of my way to look at his stuff. But of course this has more to do with his behaviour than anything else.

It is; at least since it was introduced with version 3.

I can't recall which version of phpBB was in use before NoOutlet upgraded it, but the feature wasn't available in version 2. (See the link above.) Since it's there by default in V3 (which was first (fully) released in December 2007), there's no reason NOT to have it. My bet is that you'll find it on most phpBB forums, though there are some where members don't have a need for it because they all know how to "play nice".

I'm afraid we have distinctly different opinions of "great". In my opinion (for example) Antonis Sarantos is great, while the central character in this thread is at best a hack unless I, by coincidence, stumbled across only his most mediocre work before consigning him to the bozo bin.

Pretty fair bet.

Just trying to be a little bit diplomatic, Alan.

If nothing else, you have to agree he's quite prolific.

Fair enough; generally I stick to the adage of "If you don't have anything good to say..."; after all, most of us on this site are at best of average skill. There are maybe 20, 30% who are really good, including perhaps 10% who are extraordinary. Though that having been said, there's often something good to be said about most people's work, especially when you can see it evolving over time as their skills build. There have been a few cases where I just haven't been able to say anything, but not many. This would have been one of them, save for the behaviour of (virtually) shoving people out of the way giving me the screaming yips. Thankfully I was an early adopter of the Foes list so it hasn't bothered me personally for some time, but the memory remains.

Thanks! I don't really have an opinion on Genghis's work, I tend to avoid street photography since it often seems to intrude into peoples privacy, but this feature allows me to see more threads with photos that I'm more interested in. Also there's at least one person who's going to label me as a foe I believe because I post one photo too often for his taste. Glad to hear he has a way to avoid it now!

But with the foe feature that's unnecessary. Folks who like his endless threads can view them and the rest can make them disappear. Sounds like a win win to me.

The meaning of the word Forum is "an open place", even if we can become a bit tired I think we have to
accept every ones right to post a thread. It also means that you have the right to filter what you look at.
If you do it by technical means or just by looking at who is behind a thread is up to you. :)
