Your Best Landscape Shots & Favorite Locations

Post Tue Nov 24, 2009 8:31 pm

I thought it would be a nice idea to have a single thread where people could share their best landscape photos and information about where you shot them from.

So let's see them people. Show me landscapes. Hopefully this will become a great research tool for photographers who are traveling and dont have tons of time to find the places on their own.

(Oh, and be sure to post some detail of you photos - where, what time of day, maybe even a few notes so other photographers can find the spot)

Coal Mine Canyon
Near Tuba City, AZ
Take AZ-264 for around 15 miles and turn left onto dirt farm road after the windmill. Drive to picnic tables.
This is one of my favorite off the beaten path places. The best time of day imo is around an hour or two before sunset when the light still hits the caynon rock or after sunset.

Desert View, South Rim Grand Canyon

Taken after a thunderstorm, around 10 minutes before sunset. The clean air and thunderclouds helped give this a real nice tonal range.

The Watchtower, Desert View, South Rim Grand Canyon
Taken around 25 minutes prior to the above shot before the storm clouds started to clear. For a while this shot stayed in my unwanted pile because I liked the shot above better. What a mistake.

Hopi Point, South Rim Grand Canyon
You need to take the shuttle to get to Hopi point and it can fill up right before sunset, so get their early and claim your spot. Taken around 30 minutes prior to sunset, while the light was still in the canyon.

Cathedral Rock from Red Rock Crossing
Sedona, AZ
Probably one of the most photographed scenes in the Southwest. Take Upper Red Rock Loop Road, bear left onto Chavez Ranch road and then turn right onto Red Rock Crossing Road. Go to the Crescent Moon Ranch Picnic Area and right when you get in head across the meadow to Oak Creek. Best at least a 1/2 hour before sunset when there is still light making those rocks burn red. Best on a day during monsoon season, with lots of water, good puffy clouds and little wind. (lol) Oh, and beware of mosquitoes!

Sedona Airport Panorama
7 Images stitched together. Taken from the Airport right after sunrise.

Hurricane Point
Big Sur region, CA
Take route 1 south over Bixby Bridge to pull out on right. Look back. Best time of day if late afternoons.

Valley of Fire State Park
East of Las Vegas, Nevada
Taken right before the sun broke the horizon

First Light on El Capitan
Yosemite National Park, CA
Taken from Cathedral Beach right after sunrise. Besure not to get eaten by a bear, lol.

Lower Antelope Canyon

Outside of Page, AZ
I like the lower canyon better because there tend to be less people there and you can go without a tourguide. Be sure to pay for a tripod pass and only change your lenses when absolutely needed - it is VERY dusty in there and you will get dust in your camera.

Now lets see yours.

Still hoping this will catch on and can become a tool for all of us to find some of these spots.

Here are some shots of the Golden Gate Bridge and where I took them from.

Golden Gate Bridge from Fort Point
Take last exit on 101 North before the bridge. At the stop sign turn right onto Vista Access Road and then in 150 feet at the next stop sign turn left onto Lincoln Boulevard. Follow Lincoln for a 1/4 of a mile and then turn left onto Long Avenue which is the Fort Point access road. Follow Long Avenue (name changes to Marine Drive) to the end at the Fort Point parking lot. FYI, the police dont always let you stay there late, so twilight and right after it gets dark is the latest you should plan on being there.

Golden Gate Bridge from overlook above Baker Beach
As with the last photograph take the last exit off 101 north just before the bridge. Turn right at the stop sign (Vista Access Road) and then in 150 feet take a right (you are going the other direction as the previous shot) at the next stop sign, Lincoln Blvd. Follow Lincoln Blvd for a quarter of a mile (past the stop sign at Merchant Road) and turn right on Langdon Court. Follow Langdon through the paved parking lot and then around the left side of the old military structure to a gravel parking lot. I took this shot right after the sun had set. It can get very windy up there, so you have to wait for the right moment and have a sturdy tripod.

Golden Gate Bridge from the Marin Headlands
Take 101 north over the bridge. Exit at the second exit after the bridge - Alexander Road. At the stop sign turn left onto Sausalito Lateral Road and pass under the highway. The road name then changes to Conzulman Road. Follow it around a 1/2 a mile up the hill past the Battery Spencer Parking area to the next pullout on the left. The fog rolled in late afternoon and set up a great shot of the bridge floating in the sky. 2 minutes earlier and it wasnt there, 2 minutes later you could not see the bridge.

Golden Gate Bridge from Moore Road
Take 101 north over the brige and exit at the second exit after the bridge - Alexander Road. tAt the stop sign turn right onto Sausalito Lateral Road. Follow the road 8/10 of a mile down the hill and turn right onto East Road. Bear left on Circle Road, then again at Conzulman Road. Park at the end of the road. I took this shot right before sunrise on a morning that had heavy fog. For some reason I thought it would look better in black and white. I think I made the right call.

I enjoy exploring the Cascade Mountains in WA state. Here are a few of my favorite spots / shots. I'm better at hiking to a cool spot than taking a proficient photo.

The five summits of Mt Daniel from Surprise Mountain in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. A few miles S of Hwy 2 and W of Stevens Pass. Mid September 2009.

Glacier Peak volcano as seen from Kodak Peak on the PCT near the head of the Little Wenatchee River. Tough to take a bad photo on Kodak Peak. Mid July 2009.

The North Cascades National Park from up high near Black Peak. This is a few miles west of Rainy Pass off Hwy 20, the North Cascades Park Hwy. Early July 2009.

So many interesting places.

This is a shot taken along the Inka Trail in Peru that I love.

The Atacama Dessert in Chile is probably one of the most unique places I have ever been. So beautiful.

The lush Pacific Northwest.
