show us your unexpected photo moments...

Post Fri Jun 22, 2007 4:36 am

This is inspired from pinemikey's great picture here ... http://forum.pbase.com/viewtopic.php?t=31586
Show us your unexpected moment... the times when you were just at the right place at the right time, and unexpectedly you knew then and there that you absolutely had to take that shot. It could be a time where you just turned around and saw something unexpectedly... or it could be one of those time where you just saw something out of the corner of your eye and you saw a a great photo.

and please, share your story

Here is my story

I live 50 km from Tokyo. One day I went to Harujyuku to shoot the wild youth there... well I didn't get any good pictures there, and it was getting late. I took the Chuo Line to go to Okatchimachi to see my friends, and I had to transfer at Kanda Station. When I was walking up the stares I see this woman standing there waiting to get on the train... and I knew I absolutely had to take her picture. The lighting, the contrast.. everything was just so right... It was just one of those moments...

then she got on the train and left..

I guess this is one of my moments. I used to go into the city center of Brussels every noon. Sometimes I had shoots with lots of good stuff, and sometimes I didn't take a single shot. This was one of the days where nothing worked, and I was on my way back to work, when I saw this. It took a while to have the real dog look in my direction, but I knew that this was a shot I could not miss, and I really like it.

I shoot candids and street shots quite often, pretty with one prime lens. Most of the time it's about putting yourself in the right place at the right time.

In manchester there is a mag called The Big issue which is sold by the homeless and other people who are less fortunate then others, it was created to help people living on the street to make a little money with out having to resort to begging, it's a very good mag. Our City paper is the Manchester Evening News and since it's become free it's had a real impact on the big issue sellers. Both sellers are on low incomes but sellers of the big issue only get money when they sell. I already knew i wanted to shoot the rivalry but i managed to spot the illlusion of the big issue seller appearing to be be balanced on the copy of the Evening News.

If i tried that a 1000 times again i'd not get it. Luck's a good thing, but we do make our own luck in many ways.

I was photographing some daffodils in the garden, and a little fly landed on the flower I was just about to photograph. I thought, 'great' and adjusted the lighting and was about to press the shutter. Then suddenly another one landed on top of it. You should've seen the grin on my face! :D

A very popular event at Christmas time in Singapore is the fake snow storm near Orchard Road. The kids just love it. I assume many have never seen snow as Singapore sits almost on the equator. I got a few shots of kids playing and looking up in wonder then I saw this guy with his face stuck right in front of the foam jet.

Jeez, guys... http://forum.pbase.com/viewtopic.php?t=31586

Proof that not many people look past the first page of the Show and Tell Forum.

Not to detract from this excellent thread...

*laugh* Honestly it was your post that inspired me to open it up to everybody ... I think people don't feel inclined to share their photos as often without the "show me your..." title, but yeah, this should be your topic really...

I was on a boat in Turkey when I wondered what was happening on the railing and was glad I had my point & shoot with me.

I was walking to go outside when I saw this view of grandmother and grandson. Knew I had to press the button.

This really is a case of right place right time. I was walking around during a recent business trip in Burnei and there was a particularly lovely sunset that day.

That was totally unexpected: she passed by as I pressed the shutter.

Actually, this happened just last night. I was lounging on the sofa watching some TV when I noticed some great light coming in from outside. I live on the 18th floor and get some great sunsets over the city of Frankfurt. So, I jumped up to grab my camera and tripod from another room when I noticed the way the light was reflecting through rain drops on the door.

I was just about to run back out to the main terrace when I thought, hell, I don't have to leave the room to get an interesting shot. I took a whole series of photos, and these were two that I have processed so far.

The full sized photo shows wonderful detail in the droplets, almost like crystals.

Both from my Simplicity gallery: http://www.pbase.com/jchambers/simplicity

Later on I did go outside and took some great shots there as well, but your more typical sunset photos. These are the ones I like the most though-

As I was trying to get a quick shot of a sculpture at a museum, I knew I only had a clear shot for a few seconds. Then I noticed a grounds worker approaching who I was just sure would ruin the photo.

Boy was I wrong.
