POST & DISCUSS: Triptych Photography

This is my first attempt to create Portfolio of Triptych Photos. I'd like to improve and would appreciate your honest opinion.

Do you have some Triptychs to share?

Hi Neske, I too like this style of presentation. I think it is very hard to get it right, as you have to consider the compositional balance and tonal range of three essentially different photos.

This is my first attempt

Hi Becky,

Mine was done by importing my images into a page layout program (Corell Draw), positioning the images on the page until I was happy then exporting the page file as a PDF. My photo editor then opened the PDF and I adjusted the canvas size and saved as a JPEG. I am sure you can also do it all in the image editor.

Hope this helps you

Regards John

Well, what an interesting topic.

Now, you'll have the kids busy for hours.

Me included.

I did mine in Photoshop. It took me around 10min per tryptich. Steps:

- Create empty canvas (18" x 36")
- Open 3 selected photos in Photo shop
- Make them gray scale
- Modify their tonal balance ("Curves" tool) to get similar visual appeal
- Add all 3 on the canvas
- Position them to get the desired composition and story
- Rescale each photo appropriately
- Soften the photo edges using "Feather" tool
- Flatten the image layers (using "Flatten" tool)
- Add border using "stroke" tool
- Save as JPEG.

And you got your tryptich!

Hi Neske,

I note you feather the edges of your images. Personally I prefer a sharp edge as it gives the impression of looking through a window frrame. I think it helps to fool the eye into thinking it is looking at one continuous image.

Thanks. I see what you are saying. I created one without Feather (see below) based on your recommendation and kinda like it.

I used Feather to blend photos with the background a little bit. Their borders were very different and I didn't like how they go together. There was a sharp, undesirable contract in-between them.

I found an easy way to get the three images together is the panorama function in Irfaniew.

Spaces can be put between the images, if needed.

This was fun to try... although I combined 3 gladiola photos in one of those 3-section picture frames for my house, it never occurred to me to use a photoshop canvas to do the same. How's the first attempt? (I'm not sure about the central photo)

I like this one a lot, but could I suggest that you swap the second and third pictures round? My reasoning being that the tree in the right of the first and the one in the left of the second look like they are the same tree, which gives the impression of those two pictures being one split picture, but of course that theme doesn't continue to the third...

If the the second and third were swapped over the half trees would "frame" the centre picture.

Or maybe I'm mad :D

P.S. I like all the pictures individually also - they have a great mood and tone...
