CHALLENGE: Shallow Depth Of Field used on Simple Thing

Post Mon Jan 22, 2007 10:55 am

Anyone else love playing with dof to give a more dramatic look to a simple subject? Please share yours, or take a new shot to post to the challenge.
I'll start with this:

I normally aim to maximize the DOF when doing macro shots as it is inherently lacking in this sort of photography but not in this case as I just wanted the false face marking to be the subject of the photo.

Shallow DOF becomes a the bane of my existance when shooting macro. But sometimes I can live with the results.

So true, Danny. Of course the easy way to add dof for macro is to use a flash. But then you contend with black backgrounds unless you use a fully controllable unit. I've needed a better flash since I started shooting digital, and really feel the limitations of the one I have. While it's let me get shots I couldn't without one, I'll have a new Canon flash before Spring. Here's an example of the dof increase, but the darker background results from not having proper control.
I love your shot btw, and always enjoy insects (Good work Phil, and Orilla.. I also like the second shot Genghis posted) I'd not made myself too clear when I started the thread, but had more of a "Table Top" style of shooting in mind, rather than insects and such. But it's turned into a nice discussion thread anyway. Thanks for sharing everyone, More Please! :)

I guess I was a little of topic ........ but I did shoot the caterpillar photo on my table top, it was in a vase feeding on Sassafras leaves and I was following it day by day.

 Yeah.. wasn't anyones fault. The thread started off topic with first post, and I should have said something then. But.. I wasn't trying to start trouble, and knew I'd not been descriptive enough. My fault all the way. You know me, if anyone likes insects, water drops and st. shots, it's me! :P
Thanks!

I'm not sure if this is type of DOF shot you meant but I like it.
