Useful tool for working with HTML/CSS

Post Sat Jul 31, 2004 8:25 pm

I've recently switched to Firefox as my main browser and am very happy with it so far.

As a bonus, I've found that Firefox has a very useful extension called "Web Developer". The extension downloads in a few seconds, and adds a toolbar that gives you access to lots of useful options with one click.

An especially useful features for PBase is "Display ID and Class details". This inserts little labels at the start of each class or id (galleryheader, thumbnails, localmenu etc.). You can also ask it to draw outlines around all block level elements, or just the ones you choose - e.g. you could tell it to draw a red outline around each <DIV> and a blue outline around each <p>. This kind of thing is actually a lot quicker to do than it is to describe here!

There are lots of other features such as an analysis of page size (download times) and one-button CSS and HTML validation.

I think this could be well worth a look for anyone who likes playing around with the look of their PBase pages.

Wow! I have only read about Mozilla but since you told here I´m trying it. It is amazing. There are so many useful tools. I think it is going to be hard to learn to use all of them, but I´m starting to learn a few already.

A few tips cos it took me some time to find out what was Alan talking about.
The feature he talks about can be found HERE(I think)
And the choice he refers is located in the Information panel
so you should go to
Tools > Web Developer > Information > Display ID and Class details

Hope this helps if somebody want to try this. I think Mozilla worth the change already.

//Edit: 10 minutes and I´m absolutly sure IE will be deleted soon, this is soo much better! :D

5 days with Firefox. I can´t understand how I did survive with Explorer. I´ve discovered another useful feature that might be good for PBasers: A Image zoom incorporated in the navigator (you can zoom any image displayed). It is not great, but it can give you a lot more information and detail.

I´m learning a lot. I must say this browser is really good to understand codes & html & CSS if you, like me, don´t have a clue. I´ll rate it with 5 out of 5 stars.

I just downloaded Firefox, and I can't say I like all that much. It renders web pages very slowly for me, which forces me to look at lot of image 'alt' text on pages until the page fully loads. It's kind of interesting from a design standpoint because it reveals a lot behind the the visuals, but it isn't much fun to look at from a user standpoint.

For instance, the smilies next to the textbox I'm typing in all rendered one at a time when the page loaded. I've been using IE6 before this, and a page may take some time to load in IE6, but when IE6 shows me the page, it avoids showing me the rendering one tag at a time--it's more like: donwloading, downloading, downloading, bam! the page is visible. With Firefox, I can watch each tag render one at a time as Firefox moves down the page deciphering the html.

Also, when I installed Firefox, it asked me if I wanted to import my favorites list from IE6 and all my cookies, so I said yes. But, it scrambled the order of my bookmarks(I have a lot of them), and it wasn't able to import my cookies, so now I have to login to all the forums I visit and try to figure out what my various passwords are.

Finally, I spent a few days this week modifying the stylesheet in the "Clean Simple Style Sheet" thread to make some fixes for IE6, and the rollover style doesn't work in Firefox, so a couple of my galleries don't look so good anymore.

What I really wanted to check out was the Web Development extension, but when I tried to download it, Firefox informed me it was halting the download to protect my computer. What??

Program made by Bradbury called topstyle I use for CSS editing (although I've not changed from the defaults as yet here) is probably the best ever CSS editing tool I've seen.

Can alter the Text CSS and see it's effect real time on a IE5.5+ or NS base browser in the bottom half of the screen, helps loads with my web dev (as it's my profession).

they have a trial you can download for free

(and no I don't work for them :P)

Firefox 1.0 has been released. You can get it from http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

If the site is too busy with traffic, you can try my local copy at

Thanks for the mirror. The main site is (expectedly) dragging today. I had installed the unofficial 1.0 from moox - but I'd rather have the official version. Incidentally, how is it like working under Prof. Tanenbaum (you may want to fix the typo in your page) ?

switched to firefox need help with sound

Post Wed Nov 17, 2004 12:31 am

and I'm one of those folks who liks a more "distinct" look on my styesheets so I've been tweaking my various galleries so they look right in Firefox. I'm also a bird photographer and I use an html link in the user description or the caption so the viewer hears the bird call when the page loads..... well, now I have no sound on the firefox view. I guess I need to find the codes for Netscape based html, yes?

I prefer the look of !E6 for my root page because it gives me borders on the thumbnails and text within the border. I have pages that give me the border in firefox view, but then my background image goes away....any ideas?

Maybe this is not what you`re looking for but yesterday I found a special plugin that allow you to have IE view (mode) on Firefox. Hopefully that might help you.
