Need some CSS help again

Post Tue Jul 20, 2004 3:24 am

hi folks,
everytime I change my layout, I do something that messes things up :-)

Would you please take a look at http://www.pbase.com/arjunrc

Problem: In Mozilla/Opera, the thumbnails are properly displayed.
In IE, the thumbnails appear pushed to the right. Can't seem to fix it.

Any advice ?

If you are expecting me to tell you how to correct the problem well then no chance :D

I did look with both firefox and IE and in IE the thumbs are shifted more to the right.

If only I could understand what you did in your page it's just wonderful to see what can be done in Pbase

Hi Arjun,

I only have IE on this PC so I haven't ben able to compare with Mozilla. But it looks to me as if the table of thumbnails is behaving as part of your my_top DIV, with the padding of 250px. It is therefore centered within a space that beings 250px in from the left of the screen.

One thing I find helpful when I am working with complicated layouts is to temporarily add something like style = "border: 2px solid red" to all my DIVs, tables etc. It really helps to see if something has gone wrong. I'm guessing that if you do this with my_top you'll see the border going right the way around the thumbnails.

I'm not sure why this has happened, but I think it's worth making sure your HTML is valid. For example, there seems to be a <p> tag in there with no </p>, and I'm not sure if all the <td> and <tr> tags have matching closing tags. Could be nothing to do with your problem but worth doing anyway.

Just to add to my previous point, if I validate my root gallery page using http://www.htmlhelp.com/tools/validator/, I get only one error (in the NedStat code). Your page has a lot more errors, which again suggest that a tidy-up might be useful. However maybe this is just because your page is relatively complex (lots of javascript).

Having looked at your code again, I think the key problem may be a missing </table> tag within your user description.

Hello Alan !
You are always here to rescue me out of the mess I create :-)

Thanks a lot for your suggestions. You must have just posted your message - Ive been playing around with it and have currently addressed the problem by making that news box an absolute and removing the "my_top" padding (should have been named "my_lack_of_css_knowledge" in the first place ;-)

You are right about the errors, they are mostly due to:
a) JS (Hey dont call it complex - its just one little bit of scroller code :-) )
b) Microsoft Filter statements

With respect to b) I decided to both add a filter as well as add a background color - browsers that support the graded filter will show and those which dont will fall back to the background.

With respect to a) -> I decided to keep it over keeping a fully validated site. A tradeoff, I guess.

I may have introduced some errors in the user area of the html last night when I was trying to re-do my style. Will correct it today.

Thanks a lot !

Hello Ilan, I would have hopefully address the issue for now.
With respect to the layout , actually I did not change much besides the color scheme - I spent some time desiging a simpler logo in photoshop last evening.

I am still in the process of reworking (ie simplifying) my site - have some more 'visual' ideas I will be trying out througout the day. Thanks for looking !
