Installing sitemeter.com js code in pbase

Post Wed May 19, 2004 8:39 pm

I started a thread (http://forum.pbase.com/viewtopic.php?t=619&highlight=) here many months ago about problems I was having installing sitemeter.com's js code into my root gallery so it could track my site stats.

After rereading the posts in that thread, I just tried to adapt Ilanphoto's solution. I installed the following code into my Profile/Message from Richard Silverstein/Update post box:
Code: Select all
<!--WEBBOT bot="HTMLMarkup" startspan ALT="Site Meter" -->
<!-- Title: Richard's photo profile page -->
<!-- URL: http://www.pbase.com/richards1052/profile -->
<script type="text/javascript" language="JavaScript">var site="sm9pbase"</script>
<script type="text/javascript" language="JavaScript1.2" src="http://sm9.sitemeter.com/js/counter.js?site=sm9pbase">
</script>
<noscript>
<a href="http://sm9.sitemeter.com/stats.asp?site=sm9pbase" target="_top">
<img src="http://sm9.sitemeter.com/meter.asp?site=sm9pbase" alt="Site Meter" border=0></a>
</noscript>
<!-- Copyright (c)2002 Site Meter -->
<!--WEBBOT bot="HTMLMarkup" Endspan -->
After checking the profile page, I now see the sitemeter.com logo & when I click on it it DOES take me to my sitemeter.com account. I also saw that it did record a visit I made to my pbase profile page. So it looks to be working.

By putting the code on the profile page, will it pick up visits to any page on the site? Or do I need this code on the root gallery pg. or the page of every individual gallery as well? I'm hoping/assuming the answer is "No."

Also, could you all do me a favor & try to click on my pbase link below so I can check whether I get any site visits recorded by sitemeter.com?

Question

Post Fri May 21, 2004 7:25 pm

Hi!
I´m just beginning to use nedstatbasic.net (http://www.nedstatbasic.net/) in my site. Sadly, it only gives me frecuency information (Amount of visitors during a period of time).

Well. That´s a very poor information. Does "Site Meter" gives you a detail information about the average user? (like Operating System, time, ...). I´m very "rookie" in the field of programming but at least that´s what I´ve seen G E O C I T I E S can do... :?:

Thanks for your time

Matias

PD: I´m still working in my site (http://www.pbase.com/matiasasun), but you can visit it anytime.

Yes, sitemeter.com's data is much more detailed (though the free version provides less data than the paid version). I recommend it highly; though you'll have a problem installing it in a pbase.com account since pbase doesn't seem to like javascript code installed in the root gallery description box. So you'll need to be inventive to get it to work.

Nedstat does give you more information...

There are "Here and now" "When" "Where from" "How" and "With what" options........

e.g. for my main page
http://www.nedstatbasic.net/s?tab=1&link=4&id=2534132
http://www.nedstatbasic.net/s?tab=1&link=5&id=2534132

I'm impressed that you've gotten Nedstat to work w. pbase!

I'm really intrigued by the fact that you've got your site counter to work in a pbase site.

Could you share with me what you've done & how you've done it since I'd love to try to do it myself for my photo gallery? Can you install the Nedstat code directly within your pbase gallery description box; or do you have to install code there & include a link to another server site where you've uploaded Nedstat's javascript code? If you have to do anything tricky like that, could you try to explain it to me so I can reproduce it myself?

BTW, from looking at yr. site stats it looks like Nedstats only gives you data on your last 25 visitors? Is that right? If so, that's a bit disappointing. Sitemeter.com gives you data on yr. last 100.

I have nedstat installed on all my galleries. All I did was take the code that they generate and pasted it into the description box.
You musk mark the "use HTML code" just bellow the description

I swear I tried many times & in many ways to do what you did, but I always failed. I added code to a comment in one gallery but it didn't seem to work.

But a light went off while I was reading a recent comment & I decided to go through every gallery & add code just as you'd described. And all of a sudden IT WORKED! Now I have code in every gallery & I'm getting hits from every gallery. I'm so excited & I thank all of you, esp. Ilanphoto & Keith Thomson.

Now, another bit of coding request. I'm trying to add a link to my root gallery description to my sitemeter.com account along with a sitemeter logo. Here's what I've written & I know it's wrong. But I think w. a few tweaks (& help fr. you all) it will work:
Code: Select all
<a href="http://www.sitemeter.com/default.asp?action=stats&site=sm9pbase">
<img src="http://genji.image.pbase.com/u47/richards1052/upload/30013347.sitemeterLogo.gif"></a>

Some problems related to HTML codes are the result of forgetting the toggle of the HTML description ("check if using html in the description. uncheck for automatic formatting (help)") in the galleries edition pages, just right under the page description.

Anyway, Nedstat Data and PBase Data does not match... Does anybody could explain why is that possible?

Richard, you should probably try and change the link to your sitemeter gif image to
http://www.pbase.com/image/30013347.jpg

Yeh its a bit crazy to link a gif by putting jpg on the end....

One reason for the pbase and nedstat data not matching is when you are logged into your own pbase account, pbase does not count the hits when you view your own pages.

Also they may have different rules for how many hits it will count from a certain IP within a certain time frame. If you repeatedly hit refresh on a page, pbase might count each refresh as a new hit, but nedstat might not. (thats just my impression, I havent confirmed)

Absolutely. Sadly I´m reading this today (yesterday I spend some time triying to figure it out)

Seems possible to me now that I´m thinking. Thanks. I´ll remember it.

Keith, did anyone ever tell you you're brilliant?! Just changing the suffix to .gif did the trick. Now, finally my photo blog has a real site counter & a visible link to the site counter site.

Thanks!

I'm not that well versed in html, but I did manage to take some script that I've used elsewhere with success and make it work the very first time with my PBase account. It allows for both sitemeter placement and a link back to the website. ------->

<h1 align=center><font size=+3.0 color="red"><p>"Fire and Iron Motorcycle Club - Station 15"<br><h1 align=center><font size=+1.5 color="black"><p>"West Central Florida"<br><p><g>Visit our website "Fire and Iron Motorcycle Club - Station 15"<br><!--WEBBOT bot="HTMLMarkup" startspan ALT="Site Meter" -->

<img src="http://sl4.sitemeter.com/meter.asp?site=sl4PbaseFireandIron" alt="Site Meter" border=0>
<!--WEBBOT bot="HTMLMarkup" Endspan -->

I changed one letter in the sitemeter script, just in case someone decided to do some experimenting and left it on a webpage somewhere for a time. The page can be viewed at: http://www.pbase.com/fire_and_iron_station_15

I found that I had to use the shortend version of the sitementer script to allow it to work. I would like to use the longer version as it allows you to view statistics on where folks are making their way to your site. I do use the longer version on my own webpages. It's nice to see when folks place a link to your pages on their pages.

A webpage where I'm utilizing the longer sitementer script can be found at the bottom of: http://www.fireandironstation15.homestead.com/

If you click on the meter and go to "By Referals" under Recent Visitors, over in the navbar, you may see how some people arrived at that website.
