Hate the dim thumbnails

Post Mon May 10, 2004 10:59 pm

Am I the only one who hates the style sheet that displays dim thumbnails that only brighten up when you put the cursor over them? I enjoy the thumbnails almost as much as the photos and this style sheet makes it difficult to see the photo collection all at once.

I guess you can better influence the layout by dropping a message to the respective pbase user and request them to change the style.

A lot of them seem to like the "cool" transition from dim to bright, but just like you I like a clean visible layout, not something that hides things.

I don't much care for them but that's just my personal taste. I like vanilla ice cream better than chocolate but I'll eat the chocolate just the same.

maybe a nice feature : vote on gallery-layout
I like this one f.i. http://www.pbase.com/nettan
The least I like the 'password protected' layout, this gives the impression that pbase is used as a remote HD and not a photo-site anymore .....

I don't like the dim thumbs, I usually move on and skip further viewing.

It depends

Not all Thumbs are the same.. Some direct you to a gallery, others direct you to a gallery page. It`s not the same a thumb that directs you to a family albums page than the real picture`s thumbs. That`s why I think DIM THUMBS are usefull mostly on pages taht direct you to real galleries. But, yes, that`s my taste.

How to remove the "dimming" feature on the style s

Post Thu May 20, 2004 3:37 pm

To remove the dimming feature, make a copy of the style sheet and then modify it yourself.
There's a setting in the style sheet called "Opacity" and this is set at a value of 60. All you have to do is change the value to 100 and you've got the same style sheet, but without the dimming effect.

Any questions, just drop me a message in my gallery...

Oh well, I just changed all my galleries to dimthumbs but I guess that just proves that people have different tastes. I guess it's the quality of the photos that really counts.

True enough, I guess my first comment was a bit harsh, although, that doesn't change the fact, I don't like dim thumbs.

clever idea

Post Sun Jun 13, 2004 6:01 pm

the dim thumbs force the viewer to roll over the picture to see it; once we do that, we're more likely to view the picture....pretty clever, in my learned analysis (I study communication).

I answered "no" beacause it's quite difficult to have just a look at the gallery...

And i'm quite lazy with the mouse

But you could be wrong. Some people (where I´m included) is to lazy to see al thumbs. Even people that DID use thumbs in there own galleries (for instance Me). Contradictions and more contradictions... It happens even when you study Psychology

PS. We only see what is worth looking for anyway.

well i voted against. If i could vote against black backgrounds i would too :)

I studied Graphic Design & (and like the previous) communication principles years ago. IMO & experience, people are attracted to cleaner, less busy presentation for gallery type things. The thumbnail dimness is nice & interesting the first time you see it, in fact my first style was webdev, but then if everyone uses it, the interest quickly wanes, making it visually redundant.

i'd say one can get a bit carried away with the powers of CSS. Striking the balance is hard however.

Just my opinion... i'll be happy to apologise profusely for any hurt caused! :)
