E mail notification for comments

Post Wed Jul 28, 2004 9:17 pm

I'd like to see e mail notification for guestbook entries & gallery comments. As it is, when I remember to look for comments every 6 months ago or so, I inevitably see a comment left for me 6 mos. or so earlier. It'd certainly make for more timely discussion to be able to read & acknowledge such comments more promptly.

thanks for your commendation. I wish I could. Unfortunately, with a weblog which receives the lion's share of my attention, plus a 3 yr. old child & twins on the way--it's all I can do to maintain my pbase gallery. I enjoy this forum a great deal, but you can only do what you can do.

I visit here when I can & post when I can. As the old Passover song says: "That will have to suffice."

While we wait for this feature to be implemented you might want to try something like this...

http://www.markwell.btinternet.co.uk/webmon/

You can add your page in (http://www.pbase.com/richards1052/profile) and then mark it to only look between "View guestbook" and "View your list of" (this avoids notification when the view counter increments).

It will check at intervals and notify you when the page changes.

---------------------------
There are some sites that do this function for you also (usually for a fee) and they will send you email when the page changes.

------------------------------

Not the perfect answer but a way around the problem for now. It is also handy if you are running a website to make sure somebody has not hacked it.

Cool tool ! I love the fact that is allows me to run my own app after such a notification. so I just put in my mail client to send off a mail to me the moment this happens.

Email notifications is now complete (almost) ! Ive set it up for once in 4 hrs, which suffices for now.

Actually I set it up for 2 places - one in the profile and one in the "forums" page (for the old messaging system - since I often get mails there too)

Good suggestion.

So, is there a reason why this is not implemented? The forum software seems to support it and there are check boxes to turn notification on and off. Kind of annoying as it looks as it should be working. Just hook up that sendmail server.

Please fix this, it's the only practical way of keeping track of your discussions, and it's a big turn-off against participating in discussions when it doesn't work.

Why not implemented yet? Probably because they are devoting all their time and energy to fixing the current problems. I would rather they do that then implement features with limited user appeal.

Email notification of new comments is on the way. For now, you can make sure you have verified your email address on your account page. The notifications will only be sent out to verified email addresses. I hope this helps.

Dear Emily:

Please give us the chance to turn off that feature if we prefer.
Thank you very much.

Just to clarify (though Emily has done the major job), the forum software and the software that runs the rest of PBase are very different. The forum is run using Phpbb, while the imageing part of PBase is an system built by slug and emaily themselves.

As Emily mentions, the feature is on its way.

After reading this, I tried to verify my email account. I have never received an email varification, which is how I understand it should work. So, how do you do this? I am very interested in the notifications.

Thanks, Rene
