SEARCH results cluttered by repetition, often irrelevant

Post Fri Mar 19, 2004 4:57 am

THE PROBLEM is exemplified by searching on 'miami'. You'd expect art deco archirecture, beaches, charm, nightlife. In fact the search response photos are mainly of planes taking off - I mean HUNDREDS of photos of planes taking off. (*) Most are from just one or two galleries. Similarly, a search on 'sport' gives hundreds of dirt-bike photos. In both cases a reasonable person might think that more-relevant results have been crowded out.
THE SOLUTION: Of course the solution would be to permit only one photo per gallery from a keyword / country match to filter through to the response group.
Just a thought. If there's such a thing as a beef from a very satisfied user, then this is it.

(*) You'd have thought that someone who wanted to see photos of planes would search on 'planes', but if you do you actually get fewer planes than if you search on 'miami'.

Maybe it's to do with the use of keywords. If the Miami planes photographer adds "Miami" to the keywords, then they would show up as hits for a search on "Miami". Just a thought.
