Better pbase downsizing to 'Large' photo size

Post Fri Jun 15, 2007 11:48 am

PBase,
New, aggressive competitors like Smugmug do a terrific job on
scaling down to 800x600, which is your default here (for very good
reasons).

If we want to make a larger version, say 1000x700 which can still be
seen even when there is site-framing text around images, it's
embarrassing to view the 800x600 that is made by PBase.
Clarity is lost and it just looks smudged.

Since this is a high-quality site otherwise, could you please add
some minimal sharpening-back on a downsize to 800x600 so we don't
look to be offering blurry, out of focus photos?

Example:
http://www.pbase.com/image/80495800/original
http://www.pbase.com/image/80495800/large

Check rail markings and water. Thanks.

I think that if we all agree on an intuitive principle image first, then resolving of this issue should have been a Priority One to Pbase and to us as well. In my book, well ahead of "picture a day," member mail, blog, or even a new title page for that matter. In the moment in which we would be able to chose our auto generated image sizes and their compression rate, this problem would be resolved.

I would like to repeat my great plead to PBase to tackle with this problem and to provide an interface which would allow us to select image size and its compression rate. The information about image size and compression rate should than also appear on the Image Edit page, and not only on Gallery Edit page, as it is now. It is very cumbersome to jump back and fort between Image and Gallery Edit, to see all data of the uploaded image.

I agree...the most important things on a photo site are photos

You guys are lucky to get any downsized photos at all. For me, I get nothing, it just says "Creating thumbnails". If I were a real photographer I would not use this site at all.

? Your gallery shows downsized photos. The originals are 800 pixels
or less on the long side and PBase generates medium and small.

Are you saying that if you post a 1024x768 or thereabouts, that
it never uploads?

Or are you just unable to upload at pbase lately? They sometimes
have upload-server problems, yes...

I completely agree. Currently I am uploading 1000*667 format and pbase generated large size are no good.
Perhaps a better suggestion is to be able to override the pbase generated sizes (smal, medium and large). This would of course be optional, most users like the econvenience of the auto-resizing.
In my case I would gladly upload a 1000*6687(original) and a 800*534(large) version of each pic.

Hi,
I have the same problem with the downsized photos.
My question is: is it possible to DISABLE "other sizes" via CSS (or another way) AND set "original" to default? That would be the best solution for me ....

OK - I have it: I CAN disable "other sizes" indeed by CSS.
.othersizes {
display: none;
}

Now my problem is to set the default size to "original". Can anyone help me?

Thanks in advance

I don't have a solution for uploading larger photos, but I have a solution for getting sharp photos at the "large" size (800px). Ever since I had a problem a year or two ago with some of my photos getting lifted and posted elsewhere, I began to only upload photos that are 800px on the largest size. If you don't upload a photo larger than that, pbase will not compress the "large" version, so your photos will look good.

If you want to upload larger ones than that, this probably won't help you.

When I process my raw photos and produce a jpg, I always also downsize one to 800px and apply the appropriate sharpening amount for that size.

I WOULD like to see pbase address this probelm, but since I don't upload the big ones anymore, it's not on the front burner.

What I really want to see is the FLASH status in teh EXIF data fixed.

There have been lots of requests on this forum for the following related features:
  1. let users change the default 'large' setting to something different, ideally on a per-image or per-gallery basis
  2. let users upload separate images for different resolutions
  3. use a decent resizing algorithm

I have not yet heard a single reasonable argument against any of these requests. I had a look at Smugmug, and it does allow a lot more customization.

Hey,

I think your competition with SmugMug is interesting, but overall they are marketing to different crowds than yours, and that's why I hope your userbase won't be affected by this. I know I'll be staying with pbase, even though the 800x600 scaling isn't perfect yet, I'm sure it'll be fixed soon. By the way, does anyone know how photo resizing works in Photoshop? I've read this book, and its a great and helpful one, but I'm looking for another opinion from an experienced user.
