POP UP ADS

Post Tue Feb 17, 2004 4:01 pm

I've noticed an increase in people using PBase to advertise commercial sites with pop up ads that appear when you access their gallary. Does this offend anyone other than me ? I would like to see it stopped !

It is extremely low. I hope Slug wacks that type of javascript off. However most people now use browsers like mozilla where we'll never see them.

Strange. I cannot see any popup in the milan trip gallery. Are you sure it is not some malware on your machine? What kind of popup are you being presented with?

I don't see any popup either, I second the malware opinion.

I shut down all my blockers/firewalls/ scanners and looked at it with "I'm a bonehead" security settings with explorer and didn't see anything.

Try using these three free programs
Spyware blaster ( real time keeps it from being installed/downloaded)
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html also check out ther windows media play script fix to keep it from opening new windows

Spybot ( cleans your infected system)
http://www.safer-networking.org/

or adaware( cleans your infected system)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

All three will need to be check for updates when download and weekly just like you virus protection program.

The advantages of using these programs are your computer will become more stable, you should get increased speed and you won't have you resources stolen from you. They try to say you agreed to install all that crap, maybe you did to some  but not all. Its like that line you opted in to every piece of spam you get.

i see nothing strange in the html for that page.
any chance you linked to that page from another site that may have had a popup fire when you left?

anyway, i don't want any popups, random advertising, or anything that corrupts the navigation or basic purpose of PBase (displaying photos). so if anyone does find these things, please let us know in the forum or by sending an email to abuse@pbase.com

thanks,
-slug

Well people, It must be me. I just went to the Milan Trip gallary. After it came up, I waited 5 seconds and up came Tripadvisor.

http://www.tripadvisor.com/smartdeals/ etc. etc.

Wanted to know if I was interested in Milan, Italy. Now this is specific to the gallary not just some random pop-up advertising Viagra !

On top of that pop-up came another one asking for my email address so I could subscribe to Tripadvisor.

And nobody else but me sees this ?

Then must likely you're infected. Spyware, adware and maleware are all just like viruses. You need to protect yourself. See my post above. Download adaware, its more user friendly than spybot but spybot has cooler(more effective) advance stuff. Then get spyblaster installed and running. Don't forget to update these weekly. You'll be surprised at how much crap they have installed on your system to hijack it, serve you advertisements and report you to their marketing goons.

Now let's take this logically. If I'm infected with a virus, why would the only pop-up add come from a gallary about Milan, Itayand the pop-up is about Milan, Italy. No other pop-ups - none. Plus I've never been to travel sites on the web.

I may look into Adaware and Spyblaster just to see what's on the system.
Thanks for the tip.

well, it's trivial for said malware to 'see' what you are browsing and send a targeted ad.

OK ! OK ! To hell with logical !!!!

I downloaded Adaware and it came up with 154 files !! I deleted them and went back into the troublesome gallary. Guess what - no pop-up !

Thanks Bill and everyone else. I'm a little less computer illiterate at the moment.

154!?! That's a lot of spyware. Reminds me that I need to clean my machines.

Na.. adaware counts cookies from certain sites like doubleclick as spyware (which they are). So don't be surprised if you get such a number when you run Adaware for the first time.
