Extract IPTC caption from photo when uploading photos

Btw, do you know any free of charge software for editing IPTC?

Btw, IPTC is embedded in the jpg or tiff file. Do you know any other standard which is not embedded in the jpg file but in which the application creates additional file with information ex. myimage.metadata (something like that)?
