You compressed my photos EVEN MORE?

Post Mon Aug 11, 2003 12:27 am

Recently, all the pictures mysteriously adopted a 'web-cam' effect. It turned out that the 'original' file is only about 15kB for a 800x600 picture. I usually down-grade my pictures to a smaller size and lower resolution, which is about 800x600, and 100kB so that my friends who still live in the Dial-up world can access them easier. However, going to 15kB is simply outragerous. I was among the first batch of people donated, before a fee is mandate on this site. What's happening? Is this still the site I am familiar with?

I am not sure I can help since I have no idea what goes behind, but even for slug to help, it would be good if you could post a couple of URLs of the photos that are suffering from the compression "problem" so that debugginhg could be easier.

When I looked at your most recent photos

http://www.pbase.com/image/16224895/original

I don't see the problem mentioned since they are hefty 76KB and 105KB pictures.

original uploads are not processed in any way (unless they weren't a jpeg or gif to begin with)

a couple people have had a similar problem that turned out to be their computer's video had been changed to something less than 24bit color which made all images look less than good.

this wouldn't explain the small byte sizes you mentioned though.

there's probably some explanation, but your images weren't recompressed.
(unless someone guessed your password, and reuploaded compressed versions of your photos. just joking. sorry :)

Question for slug:

Can you see little white dots in the silhouette in this image?

Those look like some compression artifacts which are NOT in the uploaded file. And my computer is running at full 32bit color so it's not my settings.

I'm no Slug, I'm afraid, but I thought I would have a look - a beautiful image :)
I could not see any white dots. It looked lovely.

First, I must apologize to slug for throwing out accusations without solid investigation. But this is indeed strange.

In short, it is SprintPCS, which I used for Internet access at home (there's no broadband connection at my area). The images were down-graded before they were sent to my computer.
