Update to obnoxious Pop-ups

Post Wed Nov 30, 2005 4:23 pm

For anyone interested, I'll answer my own question? After discovering the offensive cookie was coming from 'webstats4U.com', I added it to my IE 'block cookies' list and that solved the problem. In the interim, I received a great message from a PBase user, recommending a free 'no ads' program,
http://www.southbaypc.com/NoAds/
I've not tried it yet but it sounds like it will eliminate the step of trying to find the offensive cookie, by reconizing the source of the pop-up and blocking it.
Doesn't it seem ludicrous for companies like 'webstats' to produce such an obnoxious program that, sooner or later, everyone blocks it? Now the stats are skewed downwards. And worse, some folk like me, often just avoid the PBase site altogether. Where's the gain for their customer base there? Oh well. Thanks to 'Tom' for cluing me in on 'no ads' software. Hope this might be helpful to others, also?

re cookies

Post Mon Dec 26, 2005 7:57 pm

I block all cookies from unknown sites unless i am going to use that site for something like a forum and i will look out for that webstats4u,might be blocked allready anyway.
I find it a pleasure to go to a webpage where there are no ads, especially those ugly google ads,if i go to a webpage where there is one of those google ads,i wont go back

on the spam

Post Sun Jan 08, 2006 10:51 am

I was wondering if pbase is using the no follow tag on the links in the forum. I remember it being descussed on some tech site. The general jist of it is, when search engines spider the site they see a link in the forum but it has a tag telling them to not follow/record it. This serves the function of making the url not linked to alot which was one of the reason it comes up higher in searches. At least that's the reason Iremeber hearing as why the spam on forums, comments, guestbooks were on the rise.
Perhpas its time to have a report as spam link in the forums posts.

If this is not sound or is stupid. Please feel free to correct me and discuss.

I guess you nailed the issue with simple but only effective solution,
( using option c )... Thanx Arjun.. .
what i'm already doing is deleting every other day..
I was having the same problem since last 2 weeks.... at first it was a trickle but now they seem to be using bots to fill up my guestbook with 5-6 posts in a single go...each seems to be coming from an individual blogspot with different ID's always...selling viagra to medicines to porno..just about anything... I guess thats the price one's got to pay for becoming a popular userId and Pbase Itself becoming popular globally!!
I can live with that as long as it doesnt hamper day to day operations and usability

Cheers

I set up my account to only allow pbase user's comments to be shown immediately. Now, I have a password protected gallery where I need to have a guest's comments show immediately. Since spammers will not be able to access this gallery, I don't need the spam protection. It there a way to vary this setting from gallery to gallery, or just on password protected galleries.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.--Rene

Of course, the gallery settings are USELESS if the spams are posted as Private messages in your guestbook! Settings to disallow messages from unregistered visitors do not affect this.

I've been trying to get Slug / Emily to resolve this problem since last week. I have only been pointed to the spam FAQ, referring to the way to prevent anonymous Comments. Which has nothing to do with the problem above!

I've gotten 79 of these spams in the last 24 hours alone! This is outrageous.

Slug / Emily, please fix this, or give a way for us to control this.

more on Spam

Post Sun Apr 30, 2006 7:25 pm

Hi guys..its getting worse.... even after i've stopped comments from being visible..spammers dont seem to be deterred... infact I have atleast 5-6 spam messages every few hours ..all selling medical drugs without prescriptions... seems like they are using automated bots & software to post in such huge volumes all over Pbase....With all these strict legislations in the last few years cant, pbase do something legal to officially complaint and get their IP addresses and sue them...
Its tough on the part of Pbase subscribers to not be able to get their proper "fan" mail and comments from non registered subscribers bcoz i want and get a lot of them and I am sure others do to

sadly you'll need to shut off the feature, till they go away. It sucks but they have you in a bot and and you're screwed. Hopefully it'll take only a week or so. The little spamming social paths don't care if they bother you and they know nothing is going to happen to them if they get caught.

I, too, have had the comments blocked until I approve them to be shown, but I swear it's not stopping them... :x I 'prolly had 10 of 'em in the last 6 hours, altho after reading some of these posts, I think I should consider myself lucky that it's not 10 an hour!

I'll just keep deleting them... they'll stop eventually ~ I HOPE

Oh, & yes, I got the same odd comment & sent one back telling the person if they figured out what it was, to lemme know! The site was void of any life, but I left the message anyways...

Thank you Arjun for posting this. I didn't know what to do until I came to forum, I've had tons of these link-leaver-idiot things this week.

I chose option #C#. :D

I have received several comments like this... not exactly these words, but similar. Several people have left exactly the same comments and they are registered but do not have galleries. I just delete them as they are kind of silly and I see no reason for them. I don't know why they do this, but it's not helpful to me, so "bye bye" useless comment!

Does anyone know why people do this?

Spam just recently got introduced to my pbase account, in my mail as well as in the comments.
I deleted them as quickly as they come so I don't have any real examples.

As far as the internal mail is concerned isn't it so that you have to be a pbase member to use this?
And couldn't pbase immediately oust the people that are doing this?

Or even better, couldn't governments do a better job to help us get rid of these pests?

I wished I was younger and knew more about www machinations so I could battle against those terrorists.

Hi All!!!
I see that I'm not the only one targeted by spammers.
Mine particular problem is:
I've been reciveing about 5 comments a day (some jibberish text )- and EVERY time from the jibberish guest name, but with the SAME e-mail
- So, my question is,for the PBase SPAM-COMBATING UNIT :) :D can the comments from that e-mail be blocked

thnx all!!!
