forums upgrade

Post Tue Nov 23, 2004 7:58 am

There was a problem with the forums before. Aparently, some of you were seeing popups. We are very sorry about that. We removed the popups and upgraded to the new version of phpBB. This should take care of things. Please let us know if you have any more problems.

Emily, thanks. Incidentally, it was not just popups - far more serious than that. As an example, I run XP SP2 and I got:

a) My hosts file was completely trashed with porn IP addressess
b) a new XXX toolbar was installed in IE
c) A resident proxy also got installed in my sytem (web.exe)

And all this after me sweeping every two days with spyware tools as well as running zonealarm.

I just wanted to make sure you knew the real effects of this break-in - went beyond just popping windows as your note indicates.

Can we also have posting restricted to registered users too? As it stands anyone can come along and post anything, including as we saw viruses.

Wangi, the problem is that even if you restrict it to registered users, some will create trial accounts and start spamming. There is no way one can restrict to paid memebers only because trial members will need help in getting used to PBase and their easiest way to get help is through the forum

Oh, I know that (I admin another phpbb2 based forum), but it is a big step in the right direction! Registering an account is a lot more hassle for these bozos then simply just posting straight away with no delay, registration or logon. It's also gives you more details on them...

If I am not mistaken, the guy who *may* have introduced the trojan into the board did actually sign up for a trial account :(

But you are right, more checks in place will deter casual intruders.

I belong to other forums which have rules based on the number of posts and length of memebership.

ie all can read
must ahev more than XX posts before able to post a link
must have more before able to use an attachment etc etc

This could be a solution, as my NAV saved me here but any user without it would have got sunk yeterday.

You are assuming that the trojan was introduced as a link or an attachment in a post. It was not. Sorry for sounding cryptic, but I am known to tilt towards the paranoid side when it comes to these things :)

I haven't been able to upload to my site recently. There is obviously a problem... any ideas how long until it is fixed?

Same here. I've been working hard to sell this site to my photo club as a place for their galleries but this problem is really hurting my credibility! What's going on?

I've been experiencing problems accessing my galleries for the past 24 hours...either extremely slow loading or it just gives up and eventually times out.
