What say you, Andrys?

I forgot! Things have been going so well except for certain upload
problems for a few.

Yes, for people who don't know, I made a pbase-users communication group that srijith linked to above. It's for us to ask one another if we are
having the same odd things happening if we can't get to this forum
(sometimes this forum has been down).

But I've used it at times to just have put on record things that were
happening so those of us who want to trade notes when not able to get
on here could.

When a person joins a yahoogroup, they can just read the notes on
the group webpage when interested or choose to get all group email
notes (infrequent) or choose to get special notices. After reading your
post here, I did put up a notice because apparently some people aren't
seeing the little notice-box that most of us get, about the disabling of
javascript. Then I chose to send that as a 'special notice' to those
who checked an option to receive those but not wanting email otherwise.

This is totally members talking to one another at very rare times,
when we're unable to here. This would be a new reason. Just an
alert that something is happening here and people should go see
about it etc. if they've joined up for things like that.

Only forum members would even know about this kind of group though.

srijith, kerry, and others

Wanted to add that Emily has said they are working on a
status page, so that will help when it's ready. This would
be a page known by all members, whether forum-bound types
or not.

egrc wrote:No. I don't think you have understood how the XSS attacks work. It is rather simple. I put code on my pbase page that reads *your* pbase identity when you visit my pages. You wouldn't notice anything unusual at all. It would be just another visit to a pbase page.
I can then use your identity to do almost whatever you can do at pbase. I could for example add the code to your pages so I could steal the identities from everyone who visited your pages.

Erik, you are right on that one. If you see my post subsequent to my original post, I added that clarification. This was pointed out to me by Slug in offline emails. I was to focussed on others harming my site as opposed to me harming my visiters. I accept, this is too serious not to do anything about.

However, the corollary of disabling JS is not the answer either. It may be the most secure, but not the answer. As you are already aware there are several server side checks (each not foolproof - but that is how security works - you implement several reasonably secure layers so that falling through all layers is harder).

A lot of us (me included) were more upset about not receiving a pre-removal notice which likely added to the flare up. I guess we are all human :-)

Sorry, that was only temporary. We are still working on a permanent solution.

Laffin'...
I have some people I installed the slide show for, and was about to go put it back. But I checked in a hidden gallery fist, and saw it had stopped again. Thanks Chris, you saved me a lot of work. And thank you for trying to get a fix for this, I know you all are doing your best.
Much appreciated!

Michael, they're really ON things. Impressive.

In the meantime, I think I'm going to keep the workaround, since the
pics loading and then always displaying possibly annoyed some who,
according to statcounter, started clicking on 'Galleries' a lot.
Dial-up users would definitely not be pleased but then they wouldn't
be unless they choose 'medium' for photos...

So now I give the option to start the slideshow, which if they want it,
is run from my main website, with a page emulating pbase's and all
the thumbnails taking them here.

Now if Pbase gives the option to *pause* I will use the automatically
running one then...

Thanks for the quick work you've done, pbase folks!

Looks like a great opportunity for PBase-users Yahoo groups
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/pbase-users/

Well kind of you to offer, but I have trouble keeping up with forums everywhere. I'd rather hang out in one place to see what's happening.

Glad to hear there was a little flutter of slideshows for some today. I'll keep my eyes peeled as much as i can.

Actually, no one talks there. Keep the =link= only, in case,
because it was made 98% for any times that pbase forums might be
unreachable, as has happened in the past. So, it's just a way people
can get in touch if that should happen. One can join at any time and
choose no-mail etc.

For a very-rainy day, in other words. In the past we've had
2-3 days of no reachable forum so it's a way to make contact in those
cases. Their servers are definitely stronger the last half-year.

My slideshow=dead

Post Fri Jul 13, 2007 2:13 pm

I suppose since everyone else is venting their frustrations I will to. I've supported Pbase since July of 2002. I operate Yours Truly Photography LLC and I have many people visiting my site everyday. I have gotten numerous comments in the past from clients about how nice looking and easy it was to get around the site. Now of course, theres a Gigantic Black Box where a slide show used to be! Not good for business, especially when you have newspaper ads, business cards, and my car with http://www.yourstrulyphotography.com printed on it. I really hope that Pbase sorts all this out soon. It's been great for the last 5 years.

Does anyone know of an easy way of making a slideshow in Flash?
Sigh.

You might check this thread: http://forum.pbase.com/viewtopic.php?t=32022
But seems they're on it, and will probably have a permanent fix soon anyway.
