Print Success

Post Sun Oct 01, 2006 8:56 am

After one week of tweaking settings in Photoshop and printer preferences, and making small test samples on my new HP inkjet, my digital home prints now equal or exceed that which I used to pay a professional lab to print (I payed plenty for prints from transparencies back when I did gallery shows in Seattle...).

Ironcially, after posting questions in forums last week about how to get started printing and how to produce the best possible results, I received only two responses from pbase members - both told me to give up printing at home and use a lab!

Congratulations. Printing digitally is as much an art form (albeit a technical one) as the darkroom. This forum has never gotten much going on the printing side beyond spam. You'll get much more useful feedback from the printing forums at dpreview or photo.net.

Gee. That's really shocking to hear. Yes: There are alot of printing forums out there, but I would have thought that this would be a place to discuss the magic of making extra-ordinary prints.

I've been a devout print-making idiot for a long time. I've had many printers, messed around with lots of paper types and hooked up my Monaco Optix colorimeter more times than I can count. One thing is for certain; getting the perfect print takes a lot of resources, fiddling, patience and good luck.

I just traded in my Epson 2200 right at the tail end of my CompUSA warrantee <heh> and got a new R2400 for $150.00 (Woohoo). This thing rocks when it comes to printing on Epson Velvet FIne Art and sucks up ink like an old Cadillac uses gas, but........

My home is littered with Super B prints. I get my clip frames from Quadro and then I go to Michael's to get heavy black paper to mount to.
See: http://quadroframes.us/index.php?main_p ... ucts_id=79

These guys are super cheap, send on time and gracious fix problems if there are any.

Best of luck! I'll help if I can.

Here are a few other sites that go into detail on the workflow process if you're inclined towards the technicals:
