Hi, everyone,

I recently discovered all the "artistic" filters in GIMP and played with them a bit. Looks fun but I must admit I'm a bit uncomfortable with the look of the pictures after the retouche. Here's one sample I did under Oilify filter

Someone told me PS filters are like gimmicks, and I should always avoid them. How do you think about it? Thanks in advance.

Photoshop filters are no more of a "gimmick"
than film darkroom techniques.

Painters used to think photography was a gimmick
in the early days (and some still do).

Tell your narrow-minded friend that opinions are like
bellybuttons...everyone has one.

That person seems a bit snobbish to have such an opinion.

It depends what you want to do with the picture. You don't have to use them, but they are there to use if they serve a purpose.

If they were a "gimmick" then they wouldn't be included in expensive professional art packages. You'll find them used in plenty of situations in advertising and publishing and people get paid BIG money for using them.

They do require yet another learning process. I don't use them because I don't know how to use them well, however, I'd try to learn if an image I wanted to use didn't make the grade and could be improved.

Most of the time I apply filters, but give them my own touch. I never use a filter without changing it. Sometimes I use filter over filter. It feels like painting.

I rarely use artistic filters, but I love the result when it's right and tuned. I think it's the case of the pictures proposed in that topic.

In the opposite, we should have to avoid to use them systematically, maybe the gimmick is here.

Some people are a bit disconcerted by them because I suppose, of their huge diversity.
