infrared photography

bought a hoya R72 filter for my Canon 5D with 24-105mm lens. Been trying for the past wk with diff apecture and shutter speed to get a infrared pic. Lots of waiting with long shutter speed but nothing gets recorded on the CF....no pics at all recorded. ANy idea why? and any suggestion on the proper way to take infrared photos? thnx
