SDHC to CF addaptor?

Post Sun Sep 16, 2007 6:19 pm

I've just purchased a 8GB SDHC card for my soon to arrive Canon G9.
Not surprisingly my current card readers don't accept it and no doubt I'll need to upgrade, this I can accept and USB card readers are not "break the bank" items. However owning a Epson P2000 this could be an issue for when I travel as I generally dislike lugging a laptop around with me.

I've seen SD to CF adaptors and doing a quick google search I've been able to find a few SDHC to CF adaptors - I'm guessing/hoping these make the SD card fully readable by devices like the P2000.

Also - for the p2000 - I'm not to worried about the fact that the adaptors I'm seeing are larger (longer) than a standard CF card as they aren't fully enclosed by the reader and don't need a door/gate closed like say my 20D camera. But was interested in knowing if there were any standard size CF adaptors that the SDHC card could sit in that would make them usable in my cameras that use CF. I've seen this done with standard SD and other smaller cards but given that SDHC seems to be "the next big thing" and, at least here, SDHC is quite a bit cheaper than CF memory of the same capacity/speed it might be an option to consider to move some of my storage over time to SDHC+ CF adaptors rather than CF.

This one looks like it would do the trick fitting into your CF bay.. providing the camera recognises the SDHC card through the CF adapter... http://the-gadgeteer.com/review/eaglete ... ter_review

It's available here.. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/EagleTec-SD-MMC- ... dZViewItem

It seems there are a lot of minefields here.. guess it might come down to trial and error :?

Is it possible that you could connect your camera straight to the P2000 via usb cable and download that way? I do a similar thing with my mp3 player and other mp3 players. The official term, I think, is 'on the fly'.

na the p2000 and cameras are both usb "slaves" which is the main reason (on a technical basis) that my vote go's every time to FireWire (which is peer to peer)

Any CF adaptor would need to be a transport protocol adaptor.
Technically, CF is IDE/Parallel ATA interface - much the same (to varying degrees) as your "old school" Hard drives and cardbus/pcmcia (and in a manner like old parallel printer and scanner ports)

Most small form factor cards like vanilla SD are the new type "Serial Bus" (very much like USB and SATA)

as such a vanilla SD to CF adaptor needs to have an SD host controller circuit built in to it, and powered through the IDE Host Controller (in camera or card reader) that transforms the data flow from the SD card in to IDE/ATA format (and from IDE/ATA back to serial bus when being written to)

My main concern was that an SDHC host controller circuit would, currently, require a larger form factor than would fit in to, in it's entirety, along with the SDHC card, a CF I or II sized card.

looks like it can, so if they go by the book and by the standards it should work (the P2000 has no issues reading 4GB CF cards so I'm assuming it's not going to bomb out on issues relating to PCI/ATA revisions and word size (ie stuf like FAT16 V FAT 32)
