Viewing my computer photos

Post Fri Sep 14, 2007 9:08 am

I've been quite happy viewing my photos through Windows photo viewer, and using photoshop when I want to do anything.

I recently downloaded a slideshow software from Ulead, and I'm happy with that. With it came a photo viewing programme so that was okay. Somehow that ended up being the default way to view.

Decided I didn't like that part, so removed that programme. But all of my photos (well the ones I have attached to inward emails) have been converted to be viewed through the Ulead photo view, and now when I click to open then, I can't because it says the programme is unavailable.

Anybody had this hassle before? I want it back to how it was, they way I was used to.

Right-click on one of your photos, click on "open with". In the program list, choose Windows photo viewer or Photoshop, whichever you'd like to make default setting.

You open the image this way once, the computer will remember so you don't need to do it again when you click on another image. If not, check your view settings.

Hope this helps.

Unfortunately that doesn't work. I can't even get the option of "open with". It only gives me the option of open and when I click there, is says "Unknown file type" and click further and I get "application unfound".

This is really annoying as I could open these images before this other programme took over as default. I could open it in the new programme, but now that I've removed that programme, it won't open at all - I get the above :(

Let me know if you can get this done or not.

And download a free copy of irfanview from http://irfanview.com

GREAT viewing utility. Fast and flexible.

With windows, the Explorer folder-options is used to associate
file extensions with a certain application.

When you install irfanview, it'll just ask you if you want to
associate images with it, and for me, it's a fast yes.

That'll fix your situation.

Thanks for your responses... I've been away for a week. But will check this out soon, and let you know.

If you are using Windows XP and want your files to open as before do the following: Open your pictures folder, at the top click onto Tools> Folder Options>File Types, once that has come up find your jpg icon and highlight it, now click the change button, this will bring up a menu box and you should be able to scroll to find your windows picture viewer. Highlight that and click ok. Hope this helps.

Thanks Posiej... I think that is probably the way that I should go as that sounds like it will get me back to where I was. Not sure if I went about it the wrong way or not, but I didn't have any success. Do you think there was only one jpeg button I had to select? There's lots of files types in there.

I know I'd get viewing back if I reinstall the Ulead viewer that took over in the first place - (I was too hasty and ticked "yes" when it asked if I wanted it to be the default viewer when loading the slideshow).

So now I've installed the irfanview, since it seemed an easy option. I can now view the image attachments, but it's still not getting me where I wanted to be. Might have to make do.

Are we absolutely sure these are jpegs? Sounds to me as if they've been converted to some other format. Or have I missed something?

As to image viewers - the best I've used that's free is Faststone, link below.
