quick question: Sigma 18-50 working on D40?

Post Fri Aug 31, 2007 3:28 pm

I don't want to spam around here so please delete this thread 1 day after someone has answered my question.

I'm going to buy a D40 as small, light backup camera. Now I know that some lenses don't work on it.

Will the Sigma 18-50mm Makro (the older version, not the new HSM) work on a D40 (Will the autofocus work?)?
I really need the answer as quick as possible.

Thank you,
The Last European

Lenses must have silent wave (HSM on Sigma) to autofocus on a D40, it has no internal AF motor. All other functions will work regardless, you'll just have to focus manually.
Nikon D300, D200
Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D, 55mm f/1.4 micro, 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G DX, 80-200 f/2.8D
Apple PowerBook G4, MacBook Pro
Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop CS3

Are you completely sure?

I'm pretty confused now because I read on another website that the lens does work perfectly with the D40.

I think it's also pretty strange that the common kit lens of the D40 weights only about 200 gramms and my Sigma 18-50mm 1:2.8 macro with nearly the same zoom range as the 18-55 kit lens weights 500 gramms. I think it has to include some motor in it with that weight but I'm not sure because I never really cared about thouse things and the D40 or D40x. Now if it's really not working with most of the lenses I'd use I won't buy it although it seems very nice to me because it's cheap and lightweight.

It seems to me that the easy answer would be to take your lens to a camera store that sells the D40 and ask your questions. The sales person could try the lens on the camera and be able to answer your question with certainty.

I'll try that on monday, what a great idea ;-)

But maybe someone knows for sure if the combination of the two items works.
