Voting (uggh, this topic again) :(

Post Wed Mar 17, 2004 8:52 pm

It appears that we PADers are angering the rest of PBase by being in the popular galleries and the popular photos lists.

I for one would like to make a formal request to NOT receive votes on my photos or my galleries. I never cared about these lists anyway, and to be honest, before the Ian week, I'd never even looked at them and hadn't ever voted for anything before either.

The voting system is probably a very good thing, I'm sure there are TONS of photographers who get noticed more because of it.

But for me, now whenever I hear the word vote, I think of the anger and frustration of others that has been directed toward the PAD group because we have "interrupted" the system.

I have placed a disclaimer on each of my galleries stating this:

"Due to some unfortunate recent negative attention the PAD community has been getting,
I would like to ask all of you NOT to vote for my photos or my galleries.
I enjoy PBase as a place to show my photos and to be in the PAD community, which I adore.
I don't care about the popularity contest at all and don't want to be a part of it."

I just want to have fun, take some pictures, look at your pictures (whether they're PAD photos or not), and comment when I see something I like. PBase is supposed to be one of my relaxing things, and lately it's been stressful.

Please also understand, I'm NOT trying to act the martyr. I'm just making a simple request :)

Thank you.

It is sad that it comes to begging people not to vote so that you don't upset everyone. If anyone’s work deserves to be up there is yours. If that is what it takes to make everyone happy then so be it.

It is all about the fun anyway  :P :D :)

I personaly have not received any problems but my stuff is not near the top 100 plus i have a note asking people not to vote any way, makes me wonder if all the bad comments are coming from the annoyed parties?
seems a little strange, a possible thing is to disable voting for a PAD gallery, something Slug could possibly sort.

Now that I have had a chance to chat with Ziggers via yahoo, I must say I now know who is the bothersome pest bringing this about. Good old fishface is at it again! Banning him from the forums was not enough. I say VOTE when you damn well want to and for whom you want to. Don't let some zealot nut case of a looser ruin the fun.

Hell, I may just start looking at what other galleries PADers are hosting and voting for the ones I like as well!

Maybe if someone thinks the PADers are skewing the voting they should spend the time voting themselves instead of posting that fact to the PAD galleries? Just my two cents.

I'd just add that I don't usually vote for non-pad galleries because I don't generally visit non-pad galleries. I don't have time to do both... even if the non-pad gallery is listed in the meta-gallery!

I fully realize that the majority of comments my images evoke are a result of my visiting and commenting on other pad images. And probably the few times an image of mine got some votes that was the reason too. That's just human nature.... you can rail against it, but you ain't gonna change it. The images that don't deserve to be in the popular category fall off fairly quickly in my opinion and I'd say that all the PAD galleries that are in the popular galleries deserve that spot on their own merit.

Angela... your photos are going to get votes... they're too good not too. But if you don't want votes, I will respect that.

As from today,I too have marked all my galleries with the "NO VOTES PLEASE" message. Before I received comments earlier today, it was clear to me that an abnormally high number of votes were going to PAD people.

My understanding of this position, I believe, is that from the small number of people who bother to vote, there are a few enthusiastic ones within our grouping and there is a natural tendency for some of these votes to go to fellow PADers. This gives the impression to others that we have some kind of unfair control over the voting outcomes. I'm not sure that we're really doing this, but I can see how others may view the results when they see the Most Popular Galleries and Popular Photos.

I had hoped that this imbalance could be made good by more people voting. A few days ago I placed a message on the Show and Tell section asking that people vote more, and across so many galleries around PBase. The response to this was appalling with about four or five people responding.

So like Angela, and Jeanne, I am asking that you don't place a vote on my images, but instead place a comment instead.

I want to enjoy myself here, not be in the middle of a squabble.

Thanks

Ray

You can vote for whatever you like, though! Maybe a separate 'popular' galleries feature for the PAD group might stop some people moaning.

I love keeping an eye on these PAD galleries. I'd never start it myself though because I was always hopeless at keeping a diary up to date

Hmm, we've got to define the membership of the PAD to get that one on the road.

The words fuel and fire come to mind. Ouch!!

Just so people know and understand the history of the particular person who seems to be making himself the self proclaimed popular list police, here is a list of threads that illustrate what kind of a person this man is. All of these threads where easy to find as they are the ONLY ones locked down in the main forum area. Some of them begin nicely enough then degenerate into so terrible fights. They are in the order of most recent to oldest found. He was eventually banned from posting here.

IF ANYONE GETS HATE MAIL FROM THIS PERSON PLEASE LET SLUG KNOW!!

I think you’ll figure out which gentleman I am referring to reading these threads with out me having to name him…

Asking not to be voted for is humble but if you're good people will vote. Don't let this one maniac ruin it for you.

I know I cannot stop people voting, but I'm really making a stand with others here.

Can I use this thread to urge people to vote more evenly across PBase. The problem is its just so easy just to pick out PAD photos.

On the present level of voting, the Popular Gallaries and Photos are not representative enough. Fine work is just hiding in the database.

To me, this is an issue for all PBase members, not just our group.
