Your unexpected gem?

Okay here's an idea,
sort of the opposite of the "worst PaD" thread
Calling out for your unexpected good results

Last minute shot, bad light or settings, etc.
you took the shot and looked at the viewscreen
(PaD is mostly a digi-phenomenon, yes?)
you hated the results and wondered why in the heck you
are doing this blasted project in the first place.

Then, because of unforseen perspective, cropping, post manip,
state or change of mind, whatever, the end result turned out being
one of your best PaD captures.

took only a handful of quick shots this day, did not like anything
at first glance, but with some cropping and slight post processing
ended up with a very nice moody piece

busy, busy Saturday about 11pm, not one photo taken...
nothing looks good on the viewscreen, but in all that flotsam there
is a nugget of PaD gold, one minute before midnight

only been doing this a few days but this one was a pleasant surprise. it was pretty late and i'd been studying for a big test and i wasn't in the best of moods. trying to think of something quick i turned on the water in the bathroom and hoped that cat would do something interesting.

this is the result. turned out better than i expected. beneath it is a link to another that turned out pretty well too.[/url]

A lot of different factors came together to give me that one, and it started a whole new style of light painting for me.

I never did say thank you to Jeanne for that, if she hadn't asked the "What's your favorite scent" question, I would have never "discovered" that blue light painting technique.

great shot angela, i love your painting with light technique. you've inspired jeff to experiment. yesterday was a bottle of scope lit with the laser pointer... his technique needs a bit of work, but he's having a good time.

i've got one of my favorite scent as well, though not so nice as yours. its at http://www.pbase.com/image/26672057 i thought i liked it until i looked at it on the computer at work and the background that is white on our monitor looked horribly tinted on that computer ( think i fixed it, but if it still looks bad to anyone PLEEEEEASE let me know.)

Well, I could make the "unexpectedly good" arguement for any of my pictures that came out well...

2003-10-18
I was visiting my parents' house when something struck me about the light hitting their stove, so I snapped a quick shot. Thinking the picture probably wasn't great because of the extreme light & shadow, I quickly forgot about it. When I opened it up at home, I found the high-contrast effect very pleasing.[/url]

I suppose this is an example of what started off as a really dull photo. I changed the colours and voila! I was very new to Photoshop in those days!

In reality the shade is mainly cream and the background a pale yellow!

Not a PaD but it was an unexpected gem. Even when I posted it I wasn't sure I liked it.
But it kinda grew on me and now it's one of my favorites.

It has to be <a href="http://www.pbase.com/image/23133027">this one</a> taken on the roof of La Pedrera in Barcelona. Shot on film, I'd seen the 6x4, scanned the neg, posted it as a PotD, written the comment, titled it "George Lucas was here" as I thought the chimneys looked looked like Darth Vader. The next day I noticed the real Lord Vader on the far right of the pic...

I'm new to this PAD malarky but yesterday's photo was a hidden gem. The weather was cold and grey with a featureless sky. I took a couple of this pier while passing and was really pleased with the result.
