Setting a theme for every week to improve composition...

Post Mon Jul 17, 2006 2:43 pm

Hi,

Offlately, I have been feeling that I am not finding ways to improve my compositional techniques...So, I am proposing that if we could have a theme every week (a simple theme that is accessible to most everyone) then we can see similar things from a different perspective and and gain from each other...

For this, what I can do is set a theme every week on Monday and the following Monday I will start another post where we can all display the image for that theme taken during that week...I would recommend that we take a new picture for that theme in that week and not post an old one from archives (but it is your choice...) You can also send me a message about what theme you may want to do in that week and I will try to get that one posted as a theme of the week...

I am not sure how many people will be up for this but I will do this for a couple of weeks and see if I can gather enough support for this, otherwise, I will quit... :(

In order to get started for this week, I am proposing a theme:

Theme 1: Leading Lines... (Something that leads the eye into the photograph, like a road, railway line, buildng edges etc...) I am posting an example but I will try to get a new shot this week for the theme as well...

Thanks!

Sounds like an idea I might want to explore from time to time as events allow. I started the PAD as a challenge to myself and also to get some feedback from the folks here at pbase.

It is a challenge for me just to post a shot everyday. I know the real die hards and core people take and post a new shot everyday. This does not fit my schedule. The one thjing I don't see often, and maybe everyone is being polite, is constructive criticism. If done properly I think we can learn from this. Anyways, I will try to work on this this week.

OK, when you say "Week" do you mean this week? (I say, reading this thread on Thursday).

I really like your railroad shot, perused your gallery a bit and am quite impressed that you took the time to explain what you were doing in your before and after shots.

I hope to get the chance tomorrow to try this out.

Thanks.

I just noticed on the "Show and Tell" forum that they have similar things going around, so in my mind it is kind of redundant to recreate the wheel. :-)))

The only thing that I noticed there which I did not like much was that there is no encouragement to go out and take pictures, it is more about show what you have...but if some one is serious about it, they can still post a new picture...

So, I guess there is no point in persuing this thread anymore...In case you guys think differently, we can start this one back again...Let me know...

Thanks,
Vibhav

I still want to find a rusty section of railroad track. Vibhav has set the bar mighty high!!!

It is interesting that in my area here, the rails are either used daily and thus have no rust, or have been ripped up already (but I digress on this tangent)

OK, I found a section of track that is both rusty & shiny...

Vibhav,

What is this week's theme?

Or are you expecting one of us to set that?

Hi Glen, first of all, really sorry that I have not been able to keep up with my post...I have been really busy at work and will be very busy for the next 3-4 weeks....I would recommend you take the lead on this to keep it going...i think it is a good concept...hopefully slowly you will have some people joining in...

you have a great picture of the railway lines...looks real good...but from composition perspective, for me, there are too many lines, so too much to focus on...therefore no core subject to set the eyes on....

I would recommend you to set the theme for this week....I was thinking something like...doors and windows or something like that...

thanks...

Vibhav,

Sounds like you work where I work. I've been getting out late and not able to snap too many shots.

I will most likely miss tomorrow's post, but I was thinking shadows this week (probably because I have been going home with the sun low and the shadows long).

OK, I've broken my own theme idea...

Doesn't look like this was an active thread anyway (of course, I just bumped it back up now, didn't I?)
