small images aren't same as originals

Post Fri May 26, 2006 4:24 pm

My small and medium sized images, as well as my thumbnails, aren't the same as the original. The original has much more color, and the small and medium images are just very flat and dull. Any ideas?

When your small, medium, and large images are created the color profile is stripped from the file. Some web browsers tend to not work when trying to show an image with a color profile. Do your image processing without the color profile.

I wouldn't recommend to 'Do your image processing without the color
profile', but make sure to convert to sRGB before uploading to the
internet! To convert to sRGB in Photoshop (CS and earlier, I think they
changed the menus in CS2) go Image>Mode>Convert to Profile...

Most browsers are not color-profile aware, but some Mac browsers are,
like Safari (and optionally IE). If you are on a Mac, my guess is that your
images have the AdobeRGB color profile embedded. The original images
show correctly to you, but not to most other people (PC-users). They will
see colors similar to those in the medium and small sized versions.

You could also shoot in sRGB to start with, or if you shoot RAW, make the
output from the RAW converter be in sRGB.
