Candid vs reportage vs documentary?

Post Sun May 14, 2006 9:40 pm

What are the differences between:

- candid
- reportage
- street and
- documentary photography

Discuss. And just to make it more difficult: embedding pictures is not allowed.

For me candid is just shooting some on any were with out getting there attention.

Reportage will be on a subject like a parade, protestation or festival.... Usually short time representation.

Street, well shot you get on the street but this can et in candid reportage and documentary.

Documentary will be more on a subject that you will or can do more then on time or day. It could be about a place, person, companies or events to, but it will be something that will be lasting.

that my 2 cents fell free to add or rectifie me.

candid means shooting on the spot with little to no preparation on the subject.

I never heard of reportage. Where I come from we use the term photojournalistic.

I think the "street" style can be considered as a form of candid photography.

Anything that tells a story, has a theme, and has a series of photographs is considered photojournalistic, which documents something. It can be an event, political issues, famous person, etc.

Now photojournalism shots are mostly candid as well but some are staged, depending on what the message that you are trying to convey.

Lastly, there is the formal portrait such as model, food, still life that are well plan and well excuted with plenty of time for preparation and proper lighting.

reportage is just the french for report it is photojournalism.

Candid/street/ and PJ are all related. Bresson was the master of the hole family. It's all documentary photography

Unless you're talking about pure landscapes or still-life (whether art or commercial), most photos are a blend of those categories.
Candids, obviously, are unposed. If part of a larger group, they can tell a story (documentary or reportage/photojournalistic). They can be a stand alone piece, such as a street scene.
In what I do for the newspaper where I work, I do a mix of posed shots (head shots to go with an article, grip-and-grins, etc.), unposed but not candid, and candids.
But if you're looking to define each separately, I would agree with what's already been said -
Candid - the person/people aren't aware a photo is about to be taken
Street - candids or not, but capturing people in public settings
Reportage/photojournalism - Events, posed and not; sometimes single images, sometimes a series
Documentary - similar to the above, though to me it is always a series of photos to tell the story and not just a single image.

Candid:
You took it within their element and they didn't pay you any mind.

Reportage:
So... you want to write a story to go with that?

Street and documentary photography:
"Man, I sure wish I could be invisible with my camera for a little while..."
