Tracing direct links - is this possible?

Post Thu Apr 13, 2006 1:48 am

Hi all,

I know this question has been asked in the past, but may be someone found the solution. How can I trace direct links to my pics, made from the other websites. I do not want to raise the copyright issues. I always post only low-res images, so I'm not worried too much about it I'm just curious. Some of my pics have hundred and more direct links, and I know I did not post them in ohter forums or groups. I just want to go to these sites and see in what context they are used.

Anyone has an idea? Is it difficult to implement such tracing in Pbase code?

TIA
Michael

I might be wrong, but my understanding is that a direct link, and the count thereof at the bottom of your photo page, shows how many times someone has followed a link to your photo. It could be one link, many times followed or many links followed a few times. If I have a photo posted and a link to an alternate photo for that day, each time someone clicks and follows that link I see a "direct link" count. Or if I post that image to another blog or html page with the url for my original photo embeded and someone loads that page, my "direct link" will show a count. If I post "my favorite photo from the week of..." to the PAD discussion group, every time someone looks at that thread here in the forum I show a "direct link" count.

The question then is, have you posted that url or link anywhere else? I don't know of anyway to follow back to someone else linking your photo, but I may not know enough about it...

Not sure if this helps, but I hope so.

Replace your linked picture with one with a message asking people to report back to you because of unauthorized use. Might get a bite.

Google sometimes works for this, if you enter something of the form:

link:http://www.pbase.com/.... etc

The problem is that there is more than one way to reference a picture in the pbase structure but sometimes it can work. :?

Direct Link Listing?

In the same vein, is there any way to get a listing of your photos to which direct links have been made. I am curious, but I don't want to go through a thousand individual pictures to find out.
