IRRITATING & FALSE PBASERS' comments

Post Mon Apr 10, 2006 12:31 pm

Are any of you getting 'spam' now from irritating and false pbasers?

Here is an example of the entry:

"There are some pictures that I would like to use on my site. Would you give me the permission to do so? I promise I'll provide a link back to your gallery."

When you click on their 'pbase' site, it typically blank without any pictures and there is usually a spill of their background/profile which includes some lame medical conditiion.

Initially I thought it was genuine but only get a second message from another person from a different pbaser with the same entry as above!

Fortunately, these messages remained hidden from viewers except me (deleting them!!).

What a pain in the A@$!!

Yep, I got them too. One yesterday and another today. Similar, yet slightly different, profiles and no photos. Both cases were from "13 year old" kids. Yeah right. No solicitation for anything though. Just weird comments about my galleries being "inspiring" or bringing "tears" to his/her eyes. I wrote Pbase support about them.

Yeah I got a comment;

"t0ny16
I really enjoyed your street photography galleries especially the photos from Ireland - so spontaneous and natural. Keep up the good work."

Great I thought ... but then I haven't been to Ireland recently nor have do I have any Irish Galleries ... 't0ny16' has no images online and his profile looks almost exactly the same as 's0nn366' (nearly word for word) who posted me a comment of "Wow,, your photographs are beautiful thank you so much for sharing them with me, Spiritual insight is awsome when I see it through my eyes as well as my hear and soul, Once again Thank you."

Wish these people would F*&k right off  What the F&^K is the point?

Yep... I seem to be one of the targets. About 6-8 a day in my Guestbook. Two word comments (Good design, Nice job, etc.) followed by links to some other website. This has happened 7 of the past 9 days.

I do just delete them. I ended up deleting your legit comment by mistake two days back because it was stuck in the middle of the spam :(

Annoying

I'm getting those as well, but also bunch of others "Nice gallery", "Great work" and then slew of the URLs to their websites. Usually comming during EST night hours. About 6 or 8 of them. Sometimes several times a day.

Pure SPAM. I think this is one of the sideeffect of PBase galleries being exposed to the Google and other search engines.

Anyone knows how to get back to them? :D

I often spend an hour or two each day dealing with spam comments.
Incredible waste of time.
We've got the most common form of spam 99% under control.
These spams include links to some other site and are much easier to scan for.
The comments that are spam but include no link are harder to monitor.
I don't even know the purpose of these.

Most types of spam I can find myself, but if you're seeing spam from these blank PBase accounts, please go to their profile page and add them to your blacklist usergroup. We can then look for accounts that have been added to blacklists to see if they should be blacklisted sitewide.
Sorry for the inconvenience. We do the best we can to protect you from this garbage but it keeps coming.

Also, don't forget the account settings you can use to only allow comments from people with accounts, or people with paid accounts.
I know some people don't like this because it might prevent some legitimate comments, but it will help the spam problem.

Slug, would it be a good idea to make non-PBase users go through a captcha before they can comment? The reasoning is that these non-paid users are more likely to be spam bots, more that those that post spam comments after registering? This way we can get the best of both worlds by letting non-paid users comment, but at the same time filter out those bots.

I got really mad at myself, cried for about a minute and then blamed it all on the hormones of being a new dad

OBTW- Eight more "two worders" today with links to God knows what

Due to the influx of overwhelming spam I decided to turn off my guestbook and comment feature. Thusfar it has worked. Sure comments are nice to read, but I do not count on them at this moment in my life.

If all members could do the same for a short while, perhaps the spammers will go away. :D
