I usually don't right at first, certainly not if it is the first time I have looked at someone's work. I need to feel like I know them a bit and they know me a bit before I will offer criticism like that and when I do, it is a private comment.

The only exception to this is if someone specifically requests it in the comments of that photo. Then it is open season but I still try be diplomatic about it. I always try to put myself in the other persons shoes and write things thinking about how they will read it.

Just be diplomatic and make the message private, would be my best guess. If you know someone overreacts then don't comment. Remember after all, one man's meat is another's poison and while some may like a photo, others do not. That doesn't mean it's a bad photo, just that it is one of those that people either love or hate.

Now, if there are a lot of technical issues with it, maybe just keep comments to the technical side of it.

I'll accept some constructive criticism

Post Thu Mar 16, 2006 8:18 am

I have been reading through your forum and I agree that calling someone's work a pure dog crap is not really useful at all.

But I personally would enjoy some constructive criticism to my work and if anybody wants to join in. We can all look at each other's gallery and make some comment on it, I am more than happy in starting that!

So give me some feedback on those who are interested in getting their work be given constructive criticism. I believe that it will only help us to shoot better anyway!

cheers,

And remember, it is not everyones intention to produce fine art photos. Different people post pictures here for different reasons.

I would also welcome constructive criticism, but with the emphasis on constructive.

Alex, an excellent idea. It is a shame that Pbase does not have a forum dedicated to this topic where we could post individual pictures or links to galleries that we would like to have open to critique.

Since we don't have that, I have created and published a topic called Photo Critique. The URL is

http://www.pbase.com/topics/bobt54/photo_critique

You may want to consider creating a separate gallery devoted just to this. That way you can focus comments on only the pictures you want comments on. Also, Pbase does not let me add your entire gallery to this topic, so you need to chose a specific one.

Either reply to this thread or PM me with the link to the gallery you would like to have included and I will add your gallery. This is open to all.

Reasons

Post Mon Mar 20, 2006 2:12 pm

This might not be the best Thread for this, but I was thinking this morning why we take pictures in the first place. Seems there are as many reasons as there are people. And, there are as many ideas of "good" as there are people. We all aim for different things in our pictures. I've never liked the idea that there is some "objective good" in photography. People down the ages have tried to impose "rules" on photos, as well as on everything else. But, to me, that doesn't work. So, IMHO, a picture is just "out there" for us to look at. If we like it, we like it. If we don't, we don't. To try to "correct" someone is wrong, in my view, as we would be assuming there is some real form of "correct." Of course, if someone asks for criticism, then go for it. But otherwise, why not just enjoy or not enjoy someone's pictures and leave it at that?

I've got to say, but one of the best people for giving good constructive criticism, is Anna Yu. Who I think was one of the first people to answer.

Her comments are always thoughtful and very helpful. She's helped me immeasurably.

Dominic.
