link to the first image in a gallery

Post Thu Jan 12, 2006 2:24 pm

Here's a feature that seems applicable to PaD galleries

http://www.pbase.com/image?u=apathetic& ... =photoblog

This takes you to the first image in a gallery, so if you have your gallery set to put the most recent image in the first spot in a gallery, you could have a static URL to take you to the most recent upload.

Consider this an "in development" feature since the URL is a bit ugly (the ? & = ) and I like clean URLS. Even if I find a good way to make a clean URL for this, we'll probably be able to keep this form of the URL still working but it's possible it might break in the future.

This was actually some old code I just dug up in response to a request for this, and I haven't tested it well yet, so please let me know if this is useful or if there are any problems with it.

Thanks,
-slug

I like it

I can make a file of my favorite "photoblogs" in Mozilla and skip the very underwhelming PAD/Populars in a snap ... it will really improve the current favorites page for me. Currently I either open each favorite in a tab or browse back; a list works waaayyy more efficiently.
Thanks!

I don't understand Slug's post. I clicked on the link and looked at the url but where are you supposed to put it in your gallery and how is it any different than using sequencing? And what do you substitute for in your own url. Gallery name and id?

Well, it's nice to see Slug checking in and posting anyway.

Karen, I didn't understand slug's post either, so don't worry.

It didn't seem too important to me.

About Slug's post and the url

Post Fri Jan 13, 2006 5:05 pm

What Slug is trying to say is that he wants to clean up the URL (make it easier to type in the code) rather than all the ugly equations and question marks. Like instead of ??== .. it'd simply say http://www.insertpasephoto... But because of the old browsers and old html style still going around, it is neccessary to use the == and ?? around here.

Slug was also saying that you have the option to have a "Splash" page like you see on more professional webpages. You can create a logo or a graphic and put it on the FIRST PAGE .... and you can insert text saying "Click here, welcome to my galleries!" and then people when they come across your site, will see the very first page.

I think you insert the picture on your root gallery and set it at value of 10, and then insert the url in the CSS area OR insert it in the title area. I will have to explore it and give it a try :-)

Hope this helps :D

Uh... it's just a matter of changing the variables

change "apathetic" to whatever user you want it to be and "photoblog" to the name of the gallery you want to view and you get this, for example..

http://www.pbase.com/image?u=jypsee&gallery=semidaily

now you can bookmark that in a folder and then change the variables again for any user/folder combination you want and you have access to a list of users/galleries that you don't have to actually GO to pbase and your SLOW LOADING profile page to acesss. An easy way to do it is to go to your google search page and enter that string in the search dialogue box and then change the variables and click on the link and bookmark it when you arrive at the desired page; do this as many times as you have favs.
Slug is just thiniking out loud in his post and he's telling us in his own charming way how to better make our favs more efficient.

Now that makes a lot more sense. At first I thought he was talking about having a photo on the very first page (root) and then when people come and visit your galleries, they see only ONE big photo on the first page. I realize now I can do that by making the BIG PHOTO the root, and then all the photos underneath the root gallery. It's an idea for me to mull over....maybe I'll do that.

I'll definitely use this feature and it is so nice that Slug makes the effort to stay in touch with all of us and is actively participating. This is one of the reasons why I love pbase so much and always tell other people to sign up for this wonderful community.
