Getting a decent review of a PaD is getting harder and harde

Post Tue May 17, 2005 9:23 am

What does one have to do to get a decent critique of a photo around here. Some of mine are just what I had on hand others are in my opinion briliant, but you can't get any constructive criticism anymore. Robin Reid where are you?
If I remember correctly the PaD was a means of showing off your better shots and learning from the following posts, but now it has degenerated into a show and tell and some of it isn't very good.

I note with interest that some people have a continuing theme in the PaD, which in the long run will be an interesting gallery to review, but in all honesty would most of you put the photos you post on display as a pinnacle of your photographic achievements and in your physical photo albums?

While writting this remember I don't have an artisitic eye, but that is no excuse for some of this stuff exhibited.

Well for a short while I tried writing some constructive critique, hoping the start a trend and to get some back too. I felt that I got rather unpopular so I gave up.

I think part of the problem is the time it takes to critique. So many of us have a number of favourite galleries here and it takes time to go through them. I don't think anyone should feel bad or unpopular because of this.

The site Photosig is very good for critique.

I must admit I never received too many responses from the people I offered constructive criticism too. :P

Anyway, I can but try in this forum to see if something can be done to improve the quality of the photos for the great unwashed. LOL..

I agree---

I just posted a PAD and I think the only way to increase its popularity is just to pass your link along to people as well as putting it on your other websites or business cards, etc. I am not having much luck getting critique myself but I am happy it exists and it helps inspire me to "think" of how to take a picture a day and while I'm taking a photo, it helps me look around and take even more pictures of my children. :-)

I have an idea. A new metagallery like PAD but only for critique. Post as many as you like but only one picture per account will show up. The Critique Metagallery.
Anyone think it's a good idea?

Great idea

Great idea Anna! And this critique gallery could be photos that people thought needed critique, rather than photos that they are scrambling to take every day.

The way I see it, PaD is a difficult and entertaining challenge: taking, procesing, and posting a photo every single day for 365 days. Why in the world would anyone think that every photo is going to be a masterpiece? I'm lucky if I take one "good" shot a week, let alone a "great" shot every day. It is such a difficult challenge (particularly if you live in an area where there's not a great deal of photographic subjects at hand), that on many days, you are forced to go with something humorous or perhaps artistic, rather than a great technical or creative photo.

Some people use PaD to post the best pictures they've ever taken. That's great for them, but I'm a PaD purist, I'm putting up a picture I took on that day no matter what! I don't feel it's appropriate to critique in this kind of fun and social venue. It's sort of like if I told a joke or a story at a party and some people started picking it apart telling me what I did wrong.

But, a separate gallery for people to post photos they think are good and then invite constructive criticism in order to learn more about photography is a superb idea!!

there are plenty of other sites if you want actual critique

if you're not getting what you want on Pbase, then you should try those sites.
re: critique.... I prefer to call it a suggestion; I've offered suggestions for how to improve a photo and most of the time it's sort of well received; other times it's deleted...

and.... I put lots of my work up on my walls and other people's walls, but most of it is NOT in PAD...

Yours, confused.

(as in this has no connection to PAD at all in my eyes)

OK, I don't show up very much on this forum, but this is a subject which I do have some opinions on. I don't worry about votes, hit counts, or the number of comments anymore. I do PAD because I enjoy it, and, honestly, I don't always post the best photo I shot that day, sometimes I'll post something I'm not sure about to see what kind of reaction I get. However, it is getting tougher to get even constructive positive feedback.

I tried in the past leaving positive messages, with suggestions to improve an image, and sometimes I got good PMs, asking for more insight, but other times the PMs were more along the lines of "what right do you have leaving these comments on my image." Yet, I always tried to include something positive. I had some deleted, too, but I have no problem with that, as a person has the right to control the content of their web space in any way that want, they pay for it, after all. I'd much rather have my comments deleted, than get an incredulous message, anyway. This is why I don't bother to leave constructive critism anymore, unless I really like an image, and can say why I like it. This what the people want, why fight it?

(steps off soapbox...)

PAD

For the first time ever I offered a suggestion on a photo. It was for Robin Reid. I had never been to his site, and did not go through until I posted it. Once I had been through his site, I felt the fool. I gave this guy a suggestion on photoshop. This guy is Mr photoshop. So not likely I will comment on anything again soon.

As for PAD I did this once, before PBASE was even around 1998-1999, it was a pain in the ass. But I stuck to it, and still have not got them all posted. I just started again but won't be controlled like the last time. It is a running theme, and your right it won't be my best work. But I will try to enjoy it this time. Regards!

Oh yeah, one more thought - wouldn't it be cool to have anonymous PaD meta-gallery? You don't know who did what, but you can leave comments on them (comments would not be anonymous). Later on, photo ownership can be revealed. Hmmm...

I'm willing to bet that Robin not only appreciated your comment, but might even have learned something as well. He's one of the few who seems to invite criticism, and just becuase he's a photoshop guru doesn't mean he doesn't want feedback!
