http://www.pbase.com/dogmamom/image/104571991 This one is close to my heart. The story has to accompany it to get the full import.
This is my dog, Jaeger, who suffers from hip dysplasia. He just turned 6 yrs but moves like an old dog at times. Here, he is on pain medicine, which makes him sad and woozy - something I tried to relay in this image. Even when he isn't in such bad shape (the pain comes and goes, depending on his condition and activity), he can never play or work the way his instincts urge him to. He has a burning drive inside but his body is breaking down. All too often he has to be left behind while my other healthy dog gets to run, jump and romp to her hearts delight. He can't understand why he hurts and why he can't go, too.
It's all too common in his breed: he's a German Shepherd Dog. Unfortunately, even in this day of very available technology, some unethical breeders will not Xray hips and elbows (just for starters!) of their breeding stock. Puppy mills and backyard-breeders don't care what a dog and the people who love him have to suffer so long as they make a buck off a cute puppy face. Jaeger's breeder knew better and claimed the parents were Xrayed...but they weren't. AKC doesn't care but the rare good breeder cares what is produced and do all they can to proof for health, temperament, work ability *and* beauty comes last. In Germany puppies can't be registered unless all those things are done. Why not here?
Okay, off my soapbox! FWIW, Jaeger is better this week than last. We're looking into treatment for him - stem cell therapy or a hip replacement but he might be a good candidate for it and it's very expensive. Anyway, this picture, to me, represents his broken dreams.
