2 ~ Black & White

3 ~ Monochrome

4 ~ Backlighting

According to Wikipedia: "Monochrome is a term generally used to describe painting, drawing, design, or photograph in one color or shades of one color"
That would include black and white, sepia, selenium tone, cyanotype etc.
Why don't we do "Monochrome" then? Just a suggestion. :D

Monochrome does allow choice...not many signs in my rural area I'm afraid..even the speed remains the same :))

How does Minimal in Monochrome sound ??

Does it all have to be minimal?

I like the idea of monochrome.

Sorry about this stupid question, but what is "minimal" in photography?

Not a stupid question at all...

... minimal in photography would just mean simple, uncluttered, maybe with only a small centre of attention or even no subject/focus* at all.

We did minimalism as a Challenge last January - here's my gallery from then as a help: http://www.pbase.com/birsay/january_minimalism

How about we go for Monochrome, but then if peeps want to add a second level of Challenge (like minimal) as I've been doing for the past few months (prime lens only and song titles) then that's fine too! I think Monochrome gives a wide latitude for creativity, since (as Walter says) it covers B&W and all the toning techniques as well :)

Doug

*That's not camera focus but as whether or not there's a subject for the eyes and brain to latch onto

Excellent suggestion Doug, I like the idea of a "basic" challenge such as "Monochrome" to which participants can add layers of difficulty/complexity on their own. This gives more photographers a chance to participate and it also makes for more interesting images. :D

We did restaurants in September. Please, no more food... just like Christmas... had enough already.

No restaurants, no Christmas - if it's going to be black and white that only leaves Bah Humbugs

Does this challenge means then a lot of Photoshop images?
I don't have this program. I work in a simple context.
A (wo)man should hear a little music, read a little poetry, and see a fine picture every day of his/her life, in order that worldly cares may not obliterate the sense of the beautiful. (free to J.W. von Goethe)

Mieke, does your camera have the ability to shoot black and white ? That's all you need to do this...Photoshop is not needed at all.

Mieke, this is my monochrome gallery from my other account taken back in 2007...all images were taken in b/w mode in camera ( canon350D ) some I added in-camera filters & tones or used sepia mode.
