Count me in too. With 3 months to make arrangements I might just make it - and on time too!

Where is the nearest airport? If I start making plans now, I just might make it....

Hallo Lovers of the North!

The nearest Airport is Durham Tees Valley International (AKA Teesside), about 20 miles from Durham. Frequent bus to Darlo High Bank, train from Darlo to Durham takes roughly 10 minutes.

Newcastle International slightly less convenient, but still do-able, Metro to Newcastle Station, approx. 15-20min by train to Durham.

.....the very nearest is Sunderland Airfield but only if you come in your own Vulcan bomber, and a bit short on landing space - for experienced pilots only :)

Yes, in Durham photography is not allowed inside the cathedral(but who's checking :), but at least they won't charge you entry fee like in York... it is all relative... try to compare the Pantheon to the Colosseum... Durham Cathedral is certainly very nice and, unlike York, a bit quieter and less touristy. Nice stuff to see/photograph round cathedral, too.

Yup, they may not have a Betty's Tearoom, but I can make a batch of old-fashioned vanilla cup cakes to make up for it!

Maire,

Durham Tees Valley seems to have the better timed flights - that's if Ryanair don't change them.

Thanks for the travel tips Anja, you've convinced me. You forgot to mention that Durham Cathedral is older than York Minster, as I like to remind Neil

Ooops - yes, an oversight of mine!
And it may not have the magnificent stained glass of York Minster, but don't forget about the KNOCKER, either!

And very convenient to get to - see travel discussions earlier on.

What is the light event you mentioned, Johnny?

Hi Anja, I should have explained, this is from the Durham what's on guide,

'Enlightenment is an international light-based festival which is part of EAST'08, the main theme for North East England's world-class programme of festivals and events in 2008. The festival will showcase four major original commissions created by two UK and two Indian artists designed to reflect and celebrate the city's heritage and make use of the iconic structures and landmarks. These will be supported by smaller pieces created by regional artists displayed in 'urban gallery' spaces such as shop windows and live performance pieces which will form a light trail across the city.'
It runs from 6th to 8th November.

Might be worth bringing a tripod!

And yes you're right Durham is the place to go for impressive knockers!

Woo-hoo, the more the merrier! it'd be great to see you again, Cathryn, and us Norhterners up here have a reputation for the good weather ;)

Living close, I have no idea on which hotels are good, Smits, - but can make enquiries if there is interest.
I find 'laterooms' quite good for something cheap and classy but can enquire - I got some contacts int eh area who are getting married and have guests that may stay in the area.

Beverley, do you like cupcakes? the old-fashioned sort, with thick crumbly pastel-coloured frosting and sprinkles? If so, then i shall make some!

Cheers!
