Could PBase, if they wanted to, Develop a Real PaD Meta?

discuss photo-a-day projects

I would support and use a true Photo-A-Day Metagallery

Bob,

I'll give you a potted history...

The Photo (or Picture) a Day thing goes back to December 31 2002, and David Mingay was one of two people who started it then and he is continuing with it to this day.

I started in August 2003 and by then there were about 12-15 people doing PAD and they all took a fresh pic each day and nobody 'strayed'. Shortly after that Jeanne joined up and she got a lot of interest going and really made it a great community. She held links to all the PADers on her page, but once the figure topped a 100, that task became unmanageable for her.

Slug then invented, in about Feb 2004, the famous meta-gallery (a new term for me then - what's a 'meta-gallery!) which showed the latest upload from anyone who designated one of their galleries as a PAD gallery.

This was fine, us PADers could then home in all other PADers work, rather than go to Jeanne's page or rely on our favourites. But of course a few wise guys joined the ring and posted photos there just to get attention. These could be good photos that would be otherwise overlooked, but sometimes they could be very mediocre! But the point is, these photos were not part of the anyone's PAD project.

During the past two years, many hundred people have caught the PAD bug to various degrees, and the varying styles of commitment has been a regular, often heated, topic on this forum. Please excuse me if I won't go there today!

I just like seeing what people have been up to, and having a rapport with some creative photographers here.

Cheers,

Ray

Ray,

Thanks for the "potted" history. :) It is greatly appreciated.

I guess I have not really thought about this as a "project" but rather have been treating it as a bit more of a "this is what I shot today" type thing. It was a bit of a motivational tool to get me to work at taking a good photo each day (I work at home so it is often tough to get out to shoot). I am now thinking I need to back off and give this a bit more thought.
